This episode of The Bill Engvall Show features two main storylines: (1) When Bill is unable to construct a pineblock derby car for Bryan, Paul creates one as blackmail to get Bill’s support on the homeowners association so he can replace his lawn with artificial grass, and (2) Lauren schemes to prevent her new ultra popular friend Erica from hooking up with Trent.
It’s time for Bryan’s Leopard Scout troop to hold their annual pineblock derby race, and Bryan needs a car capable of beating his rival’s. Bill assures his son he can build one, but of course, he’s not actually skilled enough.
Paul realizes this when he stops by to visit and tell Bill about his plans to replace his natural lawn with artificial grass in order to get rid of bugs, which he hates. When Bill informs Paul he must first get approval from the neighborhood board for such work, Paul gets an idea.
He constructs a perfect car to replace the crappy ones Bill keeps building in exchange for Bill’s support. Bill doesn’t want to go along with the ruse, but when Bryan assumes Bill built the car and gets overjoyed, Bill can’t let him down either by revealing the truth.
It comes out at the derby, though, when Bryan’s car is disqualified for being over the weight limit. Even worse, the reason it’s too heavy is because it has prohibited lead in it to make it go faster. Bryan is understandably angry, but Bill patches everything up later when he finally admits to Bryan that he lied because his son’s excited reaction to the car made him feel like he was a hero for once, a feeling he doesn’t often experience since he’s not good at most of the stuff that interests Bryan, such as science fairs and math competitions.
Meanwhile, Lauren is psyched because she’s finally getting tight with Erica (Chelsea Staub), one of her school’s most popular people. A friendship with Erica means a lot to Lauren because she thinks it will help her move up her school’s social ladder.
To Lauren’s great dismay, however, Erica takes a little too much notice of Trent when she visits the Pearson household, which soon leaves Lauren terrified Erica wants to spend more time with her brother than her. Trent is just thrilled a girl appears to like him, although Lauren learns soon enough that Erica is only using Trent to go to a rock concert he won free tickets to; afterwards, she intends to dump him.
Initially, Lauren is happy to learn Erica still wants to be friends with her only, but with a little subtle nudging from Susan, she eventually realizes she can’t let someone take advantage of her brother like that, and she tells him, losing Erica’s “friendship” in the process. Trent ends up taking Lauren to the concert instead, and they quickly spot potential hookups seated right next to them.
