Supernatural: In the Beginning Explains It All

SPN_Beginning_01 Hey, I’ve only got a few minutes because I have to go back and finish building my shrine for Eric Kripke. You see, I just watched next week’s episode of Supernatural, “In the Beginning” and now I have to apologize for any time I may have suggested that Kripke didn’t know what he was doing. Like the other day when I said I’d rather have monster-of-the-week instead of mythology. I was wrong. I admit it.

Fangirls, get your squee warmed up because you’re gonna need it.

Warning, some spoilers ahead, but only if you haven’t seen the promo or read the synopsis. I’ll have bigger spoilers later, but I’ll warn you again before I get there.

In the Beginning. . .

There was Mary Winchester.

SPN_Beginning_Mary_01 You know how I’m always saying that Supernatural can’t rock a decent blonde? They did it. Mary Winchester rocks like Hendrix at Woodstock. There’s a scene between her and Dean. . . .geez, he was crying, I was crying, all god’s children are gonna be crying.

Which brings me to Jensen Ackles.

That scene I just mentioned, he has very little to say but between the tears in his eyes and the lump in his throat and the clenching of his jaw – he steals the scene. But you know what’s even better? We get to see Dean smile. We get to see him happy. And that blows me away as much as the tears.

Which brings me to Mitch Pileggi, aka Grandpa Samuel.

What a great role for this sci fi staple. He is subtle and powerful and perfect and when he. . . .let’s just say, there’s a scene between him and Jensen that is so reminiscent of a scene between Jensen and Jeffrey Dean. . . (Cyn bites her fingers to keep from saying more.) Suffice to say, Mitch has two scenes in this episode that should have the fans talking for a good long while.

And speaking of fan titillation. . . .BIGGER SPOILERS AHEAD

SPN_Beginning_03 Here are a few notes that should have the fangirls squealing with delight.

– Dean waking up in bed with Castiel beside him.

– Impala origins

– Priest garb

– Sniffing

– “What was he like?”

– A whole encyclopedia of Supernatural winks and references

And best line ever:

Dean: Mom’s a babe! (Realizes what he just said) I’m going to hell. . . . again.

No problem sweetie, we’ve got room for you on the special bus.

Now for the bad news.

Sammy fans, get ready to rumble. Jared’s entire contribution to this episode is about 40 seconds of screen time. I assume that this is because he was working on the next episode which is Sam heavy and thus the trade off. . . but I don’t know that for sure. The comment box is open, feel free to leave your “Sam is a lamp” comments as you go.

In the end. . . “In the Beginning” is a lockbox full of payoff for anyone who has watched the show since day one. I never thought it could all fit together so beautifully, but it does.

Watch Supernatural every Thursday night at 9:00 on The CW.

“Sam fans are generally Jared fans as well and Born under a Bad Sign was a fantastic showcase of Jared’s acting skills, not to mention Evil Sam was hotter than hell. Is it ok if we love that ep for those reasons?”

First of all MissingSam, there was NO “Evil Sam” in Born Under a Bad Sign. That was Demon Meg. NOT SAM. There was no further characterization of “Sam” in BUABS until a few minutes at the end. That’s my point. You loved the episode, and so did I. But “Sam” wasn’t in it save for a few minutes at the end.

So, I’m assuming that it’s not so much about Sam as it is Jared. Ok. Got it. Which again, is really too bad because from all indications there is a ton of information revealed ABOUT Sam’s story. Jared certainly didn’t seem upset at Eyecon. On the contrary, he seemed very excited about Sam’s storyline this season and it seems to me that this particular episode is going to move Sam’s storyline forward in a big way.

It’s too bad the VP debates are on at the same time as this episode, though. That’s going to hurt our ratings since everybody seems very interested in the VP debates (maybe even more than the President debates). Oh well.

I think we should be grateful for the sneak peek.
atleast wait until u actually see the episode and if ur not satisfied with Sam’s part in it after that then u can feel free to rant about it.
if Im not satisfied I’ll be right there with you lol
but I haven’t seen the episode so I dont know how I feel just yet.

right now we dont what he did in the time he’s in the episode or what’s revealed about him while he’s not there.
    it might be something juicy.

like cassi said dont make this a Dean vs Sam thing.

I’m a Dean fan and I’m also not very happy about the 40 seconds thing. Besides Cynthia wrote: “Sammy fans, get ready to rumble”. So she was counting on the upset reaction from Sam fans which I highly dissaprove.

Just saying “Sam fans calm down” doens’t really help. Yes, it’s just a show but some people have favorite characters in a show, so it has nothing to do that they don’t like the show in general.
But please don’t start the whole Dean vs Sam discussion, I beg you! It’s always turns into something nasty!

I just hope Dean’s going back in time is something about DEAN and not just more fluffing of the DemonBoyKing. I want Castiel’s pulling Dean out of hell to be about Dean, not more of what I’ve watched for the show’s entire run, Dean being nothing but Sam’s wet nurse and guard dog. I’m excited about this season at this point, but if it turns back into the Sam as Center of the Universe Show with Dean having no purpose other than to take the writers’ insults while ‘Chosen’ Boy continues to eat up the mytharc? I’ll take Kripke’s advice and switch to Grey’s.

Are fans of Dean really serious when they say that if the situation were reversed and Sam were going back in time for the entire episode they wouldn’t care at all? Not one iota? They wouldn’t miss Jensen on screen? They would applaud the writers and Kripke for writing an episode that has been called the most “pivotal” yet, one that answers questions we have had for 3 years, yet leaves Dean out? Really?

  6. By tina

Hypocrisy flying again, some Dean fans need to pack it in, I will remember this , and when Dean gets less screen time.

  7. By cassi

Was it really necessary Cynthia to write this 40 seconds comment?
You knew that there would be an uproar unless you spoiled something important about Sam that would have calmed down the Sam fans but you didn’t. You wrote it will be the best episode ever (my understanding) and then you write Sam is going to be absent except for 40 freaking seconds.
You saw the episode, the other Sam fans didn’t, so how do you expect them to calm down?

  8. By Anja

I heard that Jared was filming some more scenes for F13 while they worked on 4.03 and that is why we only get to see him in one scene.

  9. By strangeworld

“I don’t wanna see Dean being the center of some actions with Sam just being his geek brother”

Well, since we Dean Fans have had three years of Sam being the most important thing in the Universe while Dean was only his big brother there only for Sam, then I would say, how does it feel? If I trusted Carver, I’d be happy. But Carver is all about Sam and no doubt, Dean will be relegated back to what he’s always been, the big protective brother of the most important person in the heavens, earth and hell.

  10. By Jaylan

    I’m really beginning to laugh
Is it the amount of scenes that the actor is in that determine what is his effect in an episode?
All Hell Breaks Loose part 1 guys? What was Dean doing in here? Besides all the Dean girls complaining about Dean being a brother of the BOYking, what’s the problem in that? I mean, both of them boykings would sound very ridiculous for me
I’m unsubsrcibing because I thought I’d hear wiser & more enthusiastic comments than these ones, we’re fans of the Supernatural show which means both Dean & Sam as they are, I don’t wanna see Dean being the center of some actions with Sam just being his geek brother
I hope Kripke & crew give an explanation to that to calm down the unnecessary fan rage

Seriously ? You all arguing over screen time is just insane. You all sound like a bunch of stage mothers pissed off because you feel your shining star is being cheated out of his rightful scenes. Gimme a break. This episode sounds awesome! We have all been wanting our questions regarding the past answered, and it sounds like they finally might be and all some of you can do is complain. So what Sammy is only in this one for a few seconds. This episode probably needed to focus on the main storyline to get it all in .I’m sure there will be plenty of Sam to come. There always is. So please hold your rude comments until after you have seen the episode, and don’t ruin it for the rest of us with your negativity .

Sam fans are generally Jared fans as well and Born under a Bad Sign was a fantastic showcase of Jared’s acting skills, not to mention Evil Sam was hotter than hell. Is it ok if we love that ep for those reasons?

  13. By Kay

“Perhaps the reason people keep missing Sam’s characterization is because they are too busy looking at the clock instead paying attention to what Jared is doing on screen. ”

Very good point, LucyJ! And don’t most Sam fans LOVE Born Under a Bad Sign? Has anyone actually counted the number of minutes Sam was in BUABS? Less than 5 minutes would be my guess.

Thanks for the preview, Cynthia. This one looks awesome!

  14. By Allison

Thanks for the sneak peek. I can’t wait for this ep. Sounds like so much awesome. I love the Dean/Castiel dynamic, so much acting chemistry there. I have no problem with Kripke spending some time getting Dean’s part of the myth arc introduced and established. Sam’s story has been established for three years. Frankly, I’ve been hoping for the boys to get out of each other’s back pockets, neither character can grow if they don’t stand on their own once in a while. Padalecki has already said at Comic Con that mid-season would be about Sam. My only gripe is that while Ackles gets to work with a really good actor (and I certainly don’t begrudge him that) for Dean’s ‘away’ time from Sam, Padalecki is stuck with the horribly wooden NewRuby (I thought Katie Cassidy stunk too, but this girl makes KC’s “DemonBarbie” act look positively Emmy worthy). Here’s hoping Ruby gets a new meatsuit sooner than later, played by a better actress because I’m finding it hard to really care about Sam’s scenes with her right now.

This sounds like a fantastic episode full of mythology goodness! And it seems to me that most of the complaints are from fans who are upset that JARED isn’t in much of the episode, because it seems to me that ultimately this episode is ABOUT SAM and HIS DESTINY.

As far as I know, the mythology of the show does still revolve around Kripke’s reluctant hero, Sam. It’s the basis of his entire show. Just because Jared Padalecki isn’t physically there to represent Sam doesn’t mean that Sam isn’t a significant aspect of this episode. From the spoilers I’ve read, his storyline may be significantly affected by events that happen in the episode. I mean, it’s up to you if you watch it or not, but it seems to me there will be things revealed about Sam’s storyline that will be important when watching future episodes.

But I guess if people aren’t so much fans of the show, or Sam as a character, but rather Jared Padalecki, then I can understand. I’m a fan of the show, so, I’ll definitely be watching!

I hate this. It is sad that Sam didn’t get to see his mom.

  17. By Elise

Oh the Dean fans have been getting their pay-off since S3, haven’t they? Do I want to see another season with Dean-angst over his self-esteem issues (a very teeny behavior btw, isn’t Dean supposed to be like 30?) about being chosen by God? No way in hell. Angst for angst sake doesn’t work for me.
Kripke did his job, he’s alienated a lot of fans by making this show all about Dean.

Congratulations, Kripke! You got your teenshow, but I’m guessing this will be the last season. Your audience, other than your peer, the Ackles fans seemingly mean nothing. Well I hope you won’t miss our dollars.

I will never be watching a show where your name i involved.

Thanks Cynthia for the warning, even it it’s been visible since S3 it’s finally manifested itself in this ep. 40 sec of the co-lead in a pivotal episode? Ridiculous!

This is not Supernatural anylonger, this is Saint Dean’s mental growth to an ordained martyr. The porn and the sex you keep trying to make Dean more human with is long since old, Kripke. The Garytueing shines right though. Dean was more real in S1 than the sorry Gary Stu he’s become over the seasons. Only the wings are missing now and I’m sure they will be there by the end of the season? *rolls eyes*

  18. By strangeworld

Thanks for a great review Cathy. As for the Sam fans, you know what? I’m so betting that for all your whining while the chosen one Sam is on for only 40 seconds this episode is going to be about how so vastly important Sam is and how everything really is still ALL ABOUT SAM! I’m sure that will make you happy, since nothing else seems to.

I would love it if Dean was brought back from hell for anything other than it being about Sam, but Carver loves to make Sam the center of everything while making Dean about as important as a sand grain on a beach, so I’m sure this episode will make a lot of Sam fans happy that their golden boy is still the most important one in the SN-Universe.

    Yeah. Whatever.

  19. By Meg.

40 flipping seconds!! That’s all Sam is in this episode?? In what’s supposedly the ‘pivotal’ episode of the series. And it’s Dean who gets to find out the secrets about Sam and his destiny…just so we can get weeks and weeks of Dean emo-ing about it all over the place. While the show still shows no inclination whatsoever to get inside Sam’s head and tell us how he feels…say about Mary, the demon blood, the demon army stuff, Dean back from Hell for example.

And I really don’t think many a Dean fan would be happy with just 40 seconds of Dean in an episode.

Oh well…at least Sam’s 40 seconds are intriguing.

  20. By Sasha

Will the episode feature the definite reveal about why Dean was raised from hell? I suspect it will be about the same role he has always played and I’d like to confirm so as not to get my hopes up any more that it’s more than that.
