Hey, I’ve only got a few minutes because I have to go back and finish building my shrine for Eric Kripke. You see, I just watched next week’s episode of Supernatural, “In the Beginning” and now I have to apologize for any time I may have suggested that Kripke didn’t know what he was doing. Like the other day when I said I’d rather have monster-of-the-week instead of mythology. I was wrong. I admit it.
Fangirls, get your squee warmed up because you’re gonna need it.
Warning, some spoilers ahead, but only if you haven’t seen the promo or read the synopsis. I’ll have bigger spoilers later, but I’ll warn you again before I get there.
In the Beginning. . .
There was Mary Winchester.
You know how I’m always saying that Supernatural can’t rock a decent blonde? They did it. Mary Winchester rocks like Hendrix at Woodstock. There’s a scene between her and Dean. . . .geez, he was crying, I was crying, all god’s children are gonna be crying.
Which brings me to Jensen Ackles.
That scene I just mentioned, he has very little to say but between the tears in his eyes and the lump in his throat and the clenching of his jaw – he steals the scene. But you know what’s even better? We get to see Dean smile. We get to see him happy. And that blows me away as much as the tears.
Which brings me to Mitch Pileggi, aka Grandpa Samuel.
What a great role for this sci fi staple. He is subtle and powerful and perfect and when he. . . .let’s just say, there’s a scene between him and Jensen that is so reminiscent of a scene between Jensen and Jeffrey Dean. . . (Cyn bites her fingers to keep from saying more.) Suffice to say, Mitch has two scenes in this episode that should have the fans talking for a good long while.
And speaking of fan titillation. . . .BIGGER SPOILERS AHEAD
Here are a few notes that should have the fangirls squealing with delight.
– Dean waking up in bed with Castiel beside him.
– Impala origins
– Priest garb
– Sniffing
– “What was he like?”
– A whole encyclopedia of Supernatural winks and references
And best line ever:
Dean: Mom’s a babe! (Realizes what he just said) I’m going to hell. . . . again.
No problem sweetie, we’ve got room for you on the special bus.
Now for the bad news.
Sammy fans, get ready to rumble. Jared’s entire contribution to this episode is about 40 seconds of screen time. I assume that this is because he was working on the next episode which is Sam heavy and thus the trade off. . . but I don’t know that for sure. The comment box is open, feel free to leave your “Sam is a lamp” comments as you go.
In the end. . . “In the Beginning” is a lockbox full of payoff for anyone who has watched the show since day one. I never thought it could all fit together so beautifully, but it does.
Watch Supernatural every Thursday night at 9:00 on The CW.

40 seconds! Dean going back ok I would live with that but 40 seconds , every single one of the Dean girls here who have yet again try to come up with reasons and excuses . If it was Dean you would be banging Erics door down and yet have the cheek to have ago at Sam fans for just oh so slightly being upset , I dont care if these reshoots that nobody can confirm happened , this is a pivotal episode and wteher you like Sam or not he has been part of this show for 3yrs , this was a sl that goes back 3 yrs from the apology in Home and he gets 40 seconds? sorry no good enough , and wouldnt be for Dean.
no doubt this epi is gonna b rocking. but sam having only 40 sec of screen time i cant digest this fact. v have habit of seeing dean and sam together. castiel in place of sam is not done. and i dont understand the fact that why always sam is left behind in all these flashback epi. in djinss epi also dean got to live happier life. than why not sam. even he deserves to c his parents. i hope kripke does something bout these and v have more sam centric epi in future. i m very disappointed.
I can see why Sam fans be upset, frankly it will be odd not having both boys in the show. However, Eric didn’t lie since it’s indicated this eppy had to be rewritten to accomodate Jared’s need to reshoot for F13, thus rewritten means changed, means Sam had more but had to be given lots less.
I love both boys and while AHBL1 was very Sam heavy it was and is still an awesome episode.
As for the eppie, I’m stoked completely, 30.5 hours to get some serious Sam answers and overall info on the Winchesters.
Accidents happen and in the end I think it’s awesome Dean gets this full on exposure to his past as he’s the one that has a tie to mom, something poor Sam never truly had although he expressed one convincingly in CSPWDT when he buried dad’s dog tags at the headstone. But that tie comes from Dean’s connection so it’s fitting Dean gets the big reveal.
That said, I don’t hope for more eps that don’t have both boys simply because to me the brothers are the core, but since Kripke and co. have always maintained the brothers are the heart and soul of the story, I’m not worried about the future.
K, Totally on the shallow end here, but is Castiel Standing beside Dean or……….(fangirl squeeeeeeee) laying beside him in the bed? Cyn Please tell me, kill it for me now if u have to, dont let me squeee unesseccarily till Thursday.
“What really upsets me is that Kripke got my hopes up, that Dean might have a genuine role to play here, something Dean related and not Sam related, that they would be equal, parallel roles which would eventually combine. But really it’s the exact same pathetic role he’s tried to disguise with some fancy packaging.”
Yeah. That’s how I feel. Like I got a great big birthday cake and then get told it’s not mine, it’s for somebody else, but hey, here’s a pat on the head to make you feel better. WTF ever Kripke.
LMao. Fan girls acting like little children.
Can we just appreciate the show? There are questions to be answered and I’m looking forward to that.
“I’d take that rather than watch Dean Winchester reduced once again to the big brother in the Sam Winchester Show.”
Not to mention think about what that is saying – “Dean if it was just you, we’d let you rot in perdition, just like we never sent anyone to help keep you from making those bad choices which led to you making that deal in the first place. You were falling apart but we didn’t bring Dad back from Hell. But it’s Sam now who is messing up and he’s important, unlike you, so we need to try and make sure he doesn’t get too far out of line that’s why we’re bringing you back because for some reason, Sam actually likes you. You should be grateful for it too, at least you’re out of Hell.”
What a kick in the head. “Dean you know how you’re whole life you’ve felt like you were only as important as how well you took care of Sam? Guess what, it’s true!” I am so glad I am not Eric Kripke’s older brother, he clearly has serious issues with him if his idea of a fantasy is that his older brother’s life should completely revolve around his younger brother’s existence.
“I’m hoping Jensen will have the extra time to accept a good script for a good movie.”
That would have been nice. Or even an awesome guest spot. Look at what that guest spot on Grey’s Anatomy did for Jeffrey Dean Morgan? If Jensen got an awesome guest spot like that on some hopefully better show than Grey’s Anatomy – it might open to their eyes to what a lot of us already know, he’s a great actor, and someone might cast him in something other than a horror movie.
What really upsets me is that Kripke got my hopes up, that Dean might have a genuine role to play here, something Dean related and not Sam related, that they would be equal, parallel roles which would eventually combine. But really it’s the exact same pathetic role he’s tried to disguise with some fancy packaging.
Okay like I’ve already said I can understand where Sam fans are coming from. If this episode was 40 minutes of Sam and Ruby I would be upset about it. But that wouldn’t keep me from watching it. Last season I hated when some of the first episodes were ending with Sam and Ruby chatting away while Dean was nowhere to be found but I still watched them. And it sounds like even though he may not have a huge part here it is still very much about Sam and his destiny so I don’t understand how any fan of Sam and/or Supernatural would want to miss it.
Oh God.
Sam!Fangirls vs Dean!Fangirls
We have been reduced to small children.
Screw this. I am proclaiming myself a Casitel!Fangirl.
No vs. there.
Now, if you don’t mind, I am going to go complain about his limited time. XD
“Jensen could spend more time with his family and friends, maybe do some other work, come in for his guest shots.”
Heck, since they won’t need Jensen till the end of season 5 and time for the big yellow crayon speech, I’m hoping Jensen will have the extra time to accept a good script for a good movie. I’d take that rather than watch Dean Winchester reduced once again to the big brother in the Sam Winchester Show.
“I hope that if ratings are affected it will only be because of the VP debate and not because of some mass boycott by Sam-fans.”
Kathy, you do realize that ratings are *only* determined by Nielsen viewers, right? And yeah, I’m sure the ratings will be affected by the debates in certain areas where they air at the same time as Supernatural airs. I think that’s a given, unfortunately. The content of the episode isn’t going to make a bit of difference if viewers are planning on watching the debates (and recording Supernatural) no matter what.
“I also think we’re giving Kripke too much credit in expecting something totally unique for Dean’s mytharc and purpose for returning.”
Then why send Dean to Hell in the first place? Just have Sam’s mojo magically protect both of them. Why claim Dean’s been brought into them mytharc when his role is exactly the same damn thing it was before when Kripke made a huge point about how he wasn’t in the mytharc.
Just admit he’s only a sidekick, shove him off to the side and bring him in for the Very Special Episode when the Yellow Crayon speech is needed. Jensen could spend more time with his family and friends, maybe do some other work, come in for his guest shots.
Be honest about it at least, and don’t lie to everyone.
Dean went to Hell, that’s a major step on the “Hero’s Journey” and it means absolutely nothing. That’s incredibly disappointing. He’s still nothing but a sidekick who happens to get equal screentime.
I can’t wait to see Mitch on Supernatural it’s been a fantasy of mine since the first season..
Not to be picky however, if he’s Mary’s dad, he’s not a Winchester.
Now I’m even more excited to see “In The Beginning.” Can’t wait to see how Dean reacts to waking up next to Castiel!!
I look forward to this episode with great anticipation and to finally having some questions answered. A good mystery is great for the story, but drag it out too long (like Lost does) then I lose my patience.
This episode is giving me mixed feelings. While I may be a Dean-girl at heart, and I am fully enjoying the performance by Misha as Castiel, I am not happy that Jared’s appearance will be so minimal. I never wanted the Sam & Ruby Show, or the Dean & Castiel show. I am fully invested in the Sam & Dean Show. And yes, I know that there are upcoming episodes that are very Sam-heavy. Unfortunately, splitting the fans down the middle like this, because we don’t have the bigger picture in front of us, isn’t helping. I hope that if ratings are affected it will only be because of the VP debate and not because of some mass boycott by Sam-fans. Neither SPN or CW need that right now.
I also think we’re giving Kripke too much credit in expecting something totally unique for Dean’s mytharc and purpose for returning. As presented & hinted, Sam’s powers have developed and he is on a path towards being pulled to the darkside. The only person able to prevent that, the only one able to balance & temper that power, the only one Sam will listen to, is his brother. Most likely once again, Dean’s role will be to save his little brother because if Sam gets to the point of such evil, then ‘someone’ may need to kill him. We already know that Dean would rather return to hell than hurt Sam, so that just leaves the angel(s) to do the job. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the reason for Dean’s return.
“After all, I guess Dean should be glad Sam was born, otherwise he’d be a total waste of space and time.”
Right? Apparently his only purpose for existing is to do stuff related to Sam.
What I want to know is why is it okay for just Dean to go back because Sam would be too upset if he found out? And Dean won’t be?
What the heck kind of lame plotline is that? Oh Sam is such a special snowflake he can’t hear it, it’ll upset him too much, but hey let’s make Dean look like a jerk for keeping the secret, again. Because sure Sam’s keeping 5 or 6 secrets from Dean right now but let’s not focus on that, it only matters when Dean’s the one doing it to Sam “Center of the Universe” Winchester. Look it’s Season 2 all over again, only we’ll wrap it in shinier packaging.
They brought Dean back from Hell for that? They might as well have left him there.
Believe me Samgirls, with Jeremy Carver writing this, I’d be quite happy to have traded you the 40 seconds to give Sam the whole episode. Jeremy Carver sucks at writing Dean. In What Is and What Should Never Be, when Dean thought the world was real, he chose the greater good over his family. He knew without any angel telling him so that he couldn’t change history without a huge cost and it was one he wasn’t willing to pay. Now suddenly he’s all gungho to do it? It’s a total regression back to a place he never was in the first place.
I also saw the sides and disagree that it was obvious Dean would be both characters. The one character didn’t seem like Dean at all to me. I suppose not unlike Long Distance Caller, another Carver disaster, in which Dean and Sam somehow completely switched personalities. He seemed like Sam to me in the scene with, I think the Jeff character because well, Dean already learned that lesson. But I didn’t realize it was Carver at the time, so naturally Dean’s forgotten it or better yet just turned into a selfish jackass and doesn’t care.
But what does it matter? Sam’s the only one who matters, no one else. Even when he’s not there, he’s the only one who matters.
“Are fans of Dean really serious when they say that if the situation were reversed and Sam were going back in time for the entire episode they wouldn’t care at all?”
Honestly at this point I would welcome it so that the Sam fans would quite bitching for 40 seconds.
Kay I completely agree that this seems to be a Jared issue rather than a Sam issue. So if it turns out that the F13 rumor is true, how are the Jared fans going to spin that?
Oh right, the show should have ground to a halt and they should have lost key guest starts just to appease the more rabid Jared girls. Everyone including Kripke should bow down at his alter because that is the only way some of you will be satisfied.
Oh Cynthia…you are so kind and so cruel at the same time. Being a Deangirl, I oh so happy at the Dean focus but I will be glad when there’s more “team action” between Sam and Dean. I’m waiting for it all to hit the fan when the boys secrets start getting revealed to eachother.
But, right now, I’M GOBBLIN’ UP THE DEAN ACTION!!!!
That “Mom’s a babe” quote is hysterical. Poor Dean. Can’t even turn it off in the past, huh?
Oh, and btw — I’m wondering why Dean hasn’t…uh…gotten back into the saddle with any gals since his return. My guess would have been for his to do list to be in this order: 1. Find Sam 2. Check on Impala 3. Get pie 4. Get l*$d.
Maybe he’s just been busy.

“”Are fans of Dean really serious when they say that if the situation were reversed and Sam were going back in time for the entire episode they wouldn’t care at all?”"
I don’t believe Dean fans have said this. I believe most have said that yes, they’d be upset too. However, since the story is and always has been about SAM, the fact that Sam isn’t there isn’t going to do much about Sam’s character except expand on it. If Dean was missing, the fact that Dean seems to be so unimportant right now outside of Sam, it would have a bigger impact. After all, I guess Dean should be glad Sam was born, otherwise he’d be a total waste of space and time.
Dean: Mom’s a babe! (Realizes what he just said) I’m going to hell. . . . again.
No problem sweetie, we’ve got room for you on the special bus.
What “special bus”???
