Hey, I’ve only got a few minutes because I have to go back and finish building my shrine for Eric Kripke. You see, I just watched next week’s episode of Supernatural, “In the Beginning” and now I have to apologize for any time I may have suggested that Kripke didn’t know what he was doing. Like the other day when I said I’d rather have monster-of-the-week instead of mythology. I was wrong. I admit it.
Fangirls, get your squee warmed up because you’re gonna need it.
Warning, some spoilers ahead, but only if you haven’t seen the promo or read the synopsis. I’ll have bigger spoilers later, but I’ll warn you again before I get there.
In the Beginning. . .
There was Mary Winchester.
You know how I’m always saying that Supernatural can’t rock a decent blonde? They did it. Mary Winchester rocks like Hendrix at Woodstock. There’s a scene between her and Dean. . . .geez, he was crying, I was crying, all god’s children are gonna be crying.
Which brings me to Jensen Ackles.
That scene I just mentioned, he has very little to say but between the tears in his eyes and the lump in his throat and the clenching of his jaw – he steals the scene. But you know what’s even better? We get to see Dean smile. We get to see him happy. And that blows me away as much as the tears.
Which brings me to Mitch Pileggi, aka Grandpa Samuel.
What a great role for this sci fi staple. He is subtle and powerful and perfect and when he. . . .let’s just say, there’s a scene between him and Jensen that is so reminiscent of a scene between Jensen and Jeffrey Dean. . . (Cyn bites her fingers to keep from saying more.) Suffice to say, Mitch has two scenes in this episode that should have the fans talking for a good long while.
And speaking of fan titillation. . . .BIGGER SPOILERS AHEAD
Here are a few notes that should have the fangirls squealing with delight.
– Dean waking up in bed with Castiel beside him.
– Impala origins
– Priest garb
– Sniffing
– “What was he like?”
– A whole encyclopedia of Supernatural winks and references
And best line ever:
Dean: Mom’s a babe! (Realizes what he just said) I’m going to hell. . . . again.
No problem sweetie, we’ve got room for you on the special bus.
Now for the bad news.
Sammy fans, get ready to rumble. Jared’s entire contribution to this episode is about 40 seconds of screen time. I assume that this is because he was working on the next episode which is Sam heavy and thus the trade off. . . but I don’t know that for sure. The comment box is open, feel free to leave your “Sam is a lamp” comments as you go.
In the end. . . “In the Beginning” is a lockbox full of payoff for anyone who has watched the show since day one. I never thought it could all fit together so beautifully, but it does.
Watch Supernatural every Thursday night at 9:00 on The CW.

Why is everyone acting like Prepubescent little brats?
Bickering like twelve-year-olds fighting over a crush. Pathetic.
Elise, go ahead, stop watching the show. But why do you feel the need to tell us you are going to stop watching the show. No one really cares that much, you know that right.
Don’t go away angry, just go away.
This fanbase is slowly running the fandom one “Where’s Sams ignored, Dean sucks, this show sucks blah blah blah blah.”
YAY! Lets give Dawn Ostroff one more reason to cancel Supernatural. I wanna drive this show into the ground, spit on it, and then throw dirt in its face. YAY!
People, I urge you, stop talking out of you asses! Anyone consider watching the episode before you start saying the show is going downhill?
I know the idea it absurd.
And this comment barely matters because no matter what you are all still going to fight. YAY! Lets make every person that has anything to do with this shows life a living hell! WOOT WOOT!
And then we can all punch babies!
I’m taking this episode as a way for Castiel to show Dean, the reason for the choices he may have to make..
I had the pleasure of meeting Jared this weekend, he’s a great guy.
I’ve said from the very beginning, that although we love seeing them on the screne together the story has to come first. And each of them deserves some time off the set.
Wow, thanks SO much for this! The spoilers you give are always so perfect, because they tell just enough to assure us that the episode’s going to be AMAZING, but not enough that we feel cheated out of a(n emotional) scene reaction or anything.
‘Cause yeah, everything you just told us (especially that certain scene with Dean and Mary) has me more excited than EVER about this episode; I just know it’s going to blow us all away now!
Um, I don’t really feel like reading the above comments now, judging by what I read in the comments for the clips, but I just wanted to say that whatever negative feedback you got for this episode review, I hope it doesn’t change how you continue to review future episodes. Seriously, stuff like what you did above is SO helpful for (I’m gonna go ahead and say) most of us, and the people who tend to freak out about stuff are going to do so no matter what they find out ahead of time.
Also, thanks very much for telling us about how little screen time Sam will have. I already assumed that would happen based on the episode description, but it’s always good to know things for sure to avoid any potential disappointment. : )
Anyway, thanks so much for this review! Knowing even this much makes waiting for Thursday a lot easier!
I’ve approved all the comments so far, but things are starting to lean toward the nasty. Debate the merits of Sam and Dean, but please don’t bring personalities or acting talents into the mix.
Jared and Jensen are both fabulous at what they do and they each bring something exciting to the table. Actors are people, too and I know they are both very nice guys who work hard to make a lot of people happy. I won’t tolerate bashing of either of them.
As for being a rabble rouser, well, the commenters started that way back when I posted the first comic con posts, so I knew when I saw that Sam wasn’t in this episode it was going to cause a firestorm. Storm now, or storm after the episode airs, people are still going to be angry.
And again I say, you’re all focused on the wrong thing! This episode is about John and Mary and you should be wondering what we’ll learn about them that we never knew before.
If you’re a fan and you don’t watch this one – you’ll be missing a lot.
Wow, this is…wow. Okay, prepare for some bitchiness, it’s coming on full throttle.
This seems like a really great way to weed out why people watch the show. For the story? Or for the pretty boys?
Seriously? How the hell can someone be such an avid fan of one of the brothers but not the other? I admit, I tend to laugh more (or cry more) in scenes that revolve around Dean, but that doesn’t make Sam any less important.
Since when do characters become more important than the story? It is being told through them, but it is not them. It’s bigger than Sam and Dean. It’s bigger than Azazel and Castiel and Ruby and Lilith.
Why don’t you (as in everyone who is bitching about screen time for either character) try watching the show for the story for once rather than the eye candy?
And me thinks I know what this big secret is about Sam. This is going purely off speculation and theories from over the years. No spoilers have tainted this. Let me guess…Sam is supposed to be the host for Lucifer once he is released? Big shocker…
I love this show to death. I breath it, sweat it, and crave more with each passing episode. So Kripke, my God whom I bow down to, I have full faith in you. So may I just be so humble to beg, please don’t let all the big twists be so predictable that we’ve already come up with them on forums and in our minds. Be more original than that!
<<<<I feel kinda bad for people of only devote themselves to just Dean or just Sam.
its so much more enjoyable if u genuinely like/care about both characters.<<<<<<
Sam&Dean!Girl, exactly! I couldn’t imagine Supernatural without one of the both brothers, they are one character to me. *lol*
As a Sam fan how can I not feel for Dean and the way he cares for his brother?! He loves him just like I do! That alone is reason enough to adore him as well…
1973? Don’t know the exact year, but it’s definitely in the 70s. Like myself Dean’s born in 1979 (;D) so the episode has to be set a few years before…
Strangeworld, Elise never really leaves. She pops up on every single blog and message board, crying about how she’s done with the show… but the thing is, she’s been doing it for months now. She ain’t leaving. I wish she would, for the repetitiveness alone, but I think we’re stuck with her.
God, you’re all like children. I’m a Dean!girl, but I love Sam with all my heart, and I enjoyed the mithology in which he was involved the same way I’m going to enjoy Dean’s. And if you stop watching the show just because of something so stupid like this, you’re not true fans. So don’t let the door hits you in the ass in your way out.
Melanie,I know what u mean. we’re SO like to have just two main characters.
I use to be into Heroes but I really only favored one or two of the characters but there are so many characters and so many storylines Im pretty bored when its not the characters I like.
likely I love all the main characters on Supernatural…..all two of them. lol
I feel kinda bad for people of only devote themselves to just Dean or just Sam.
its so much more enjoyable if u genuinely like/care about both characters.
can someone tell me what year dean goes back to?
the clothes they’re wearing looks very today.
Vera, of course not, and I was not speaking for myself, sorry if I am not well expressed.
My English is somewhat limited.
Just based on the reactions of Sam fans, and I am one too. I was not happy about the few seconds that he will appear in the episode, I confess, but I love the series, I love Dean, I love Sam, and I’ll never fail to see the series as the two of them and their relationship are the main focus.
Because the two are the main focus and always will be, I hope
“And you, Dean fans who are enjoying the change, you should fear for the series, because the audience can fall with the lack of focus on Sam.”
So Gab, you’re saying that normally Sam is the focus of the show? Okay then. I guess it’s Dean’s turn. ;)
The season premiere was one of (if not THE) highest rated Supernatural episode on the CW. The ratings and critical reviews have been been great so far this season (much better than early last season), so I guess the viewers are responding positively to this season so far.
I think Supernatural is really hitting it’s stride right now. Personally, I cannot wait until Thursday night to see this episode!
I’m a Jared/Sam fan myself so I’m glad for the heads up but I’m gonna enjoy the episode anyway. We are so lucky with only two regulars. Sam and Dean are practically in every scene! Just think about all the ensemble shows where you have to sit through some really boring stuff till your fave character’s on. We really could appreciate it more…
I’m so excited for the new episode. I can’t wait to find out about Mary! Thank you, Cynthia for this great review! <3
The episodes focused on Sam never had and never will have just 40 seconds of Dean.
And you, Dean fans who are enjoying the change, you should fear for the series, because the audience can fall with the lack of focus on Sam.
Hey, guys, remember that thing called the writer’s strike? And how that shortened the third season and set some things back in the story, so that the focus of the season pretty much *had* to be on Dean’s deal? Oh, but wait, no. That didn’t happen, did it? This must all be Kripke’s Great Plan Against Sam Winchester. :P
All about Sam? Like S3? *dies of laughter* Nope, Kripke ha shown his colors. He switched the show’s core totally and this is not what I set out to watch. The old mytharc has been dragging for ages and we’ve had angsty Dean for so long that I can’t stomach it any longer. Launching a new arc at this point is redundant.
This show is simply not what it used to be, in all ways possible it’s a totally different show. Enjoy your Saint Dean or gods sake! Me jumping off won’t destroy you enjoyment of this new show, now will it?
When did people lose the ability to just enjoy a good story?? I don’t understand all this, “WELL, HE’S MY FAV CHARACTER, SO IF HE’S NOT ON SCREEN, I’M NOT WATCHING.” It’s the story that counts. That’s what has me sucked in. I’m just along for the ride. And loving every minute of it! :)
Elise, what will you do when the next episode, you know, the Sam heavy one comes on? Will you run back? As I Dean fan, should I say good bye Mr. Kripke cause this is too Sam heavy for me? Really? Hmm, considering Kripke is keeping his show All About Sam, I would say have a nice trip.
Seems Sam’s part of this show just has been annulled.
Thank you Kripke and goodbye.
At least now we know Jared was not doing reshoots for Friday the 13th. Nor was he working on the next “Sam heavy” episode. Obviously he was never meant to be a part of this episode. At least he got a little rest and relaxation. Great for Jared not so great for Sam fans.
Well, it doesn’t look like Jared suffered much from not being on the set since he took off for Hawaii according to this;
