The Stone Roses were a fantastic band… in their day. Now, maybe not so much. If they get together again for a reunion tour, they risk destroying the legacy they have so far created which leaves them as one of the greatest British bands ever. So would they risk it?
This question has been kicked around for a while now. Mani seems up for it, Ian Brown most certainly isn’t, and John Squire and Reni haven’t aired their views in public as of yet. So the chances are against it happening.
However, The Mirror claimed today that the Stone Roses are set to reform later this year, with 21 gigs booked in the UK, and possibly the Coachella Festival in California as well. This reunion would supposedly coincide with the re-release of the band’s self-titled debut album, which has received plenty of plaudits down the years.
A ‘source’ supposedly said:
“It’s taken a lot of time to get Ian to agree but he’s finally signed on the dotted line. The rest of the band were really up for it, especially when they realised the amount of money on the table.”
The newspaper claims that Ian Brown was persuaded by John Squire, Mani, and Reni, even though Brown and Squire haven’t spoken to each other since the latter left the band in 1996. Which seems strange.
Brown’s spokesman was quick to deny the story, telling the Daily Mail:
“We know nothing about a reunion. Ian is working on his new studio album which is due out later this year.”
Certainly, this would fit in with what Brown has already said about the possibility of a Stone Roses reunion. There’s also the fact that John Squire is staging a major art exhibition this summer and any tour would surely disrupt those plans. And Coachella? I doubt it seeing as the festival is just a month away and there’s no sign of the Stone Roses in the line-up.
This seems like a totally made-up story, possibly concocted purely from the fact that the album is being released. After all, The Sun claimed last year that Led Zeppelin were reforming and that turned out to be utter hogwash.
Don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers. In fact, don’t believe any of it.

I hope they jell-up again, at least make some kind of tribute album to their reunion. I have the “Best of the Stone Roses” CD and it is AMAZING–sounds as if were made only yesterday. I can’t stop listening to it. They’ve got something–don’t know what–that keeps me coming back for more.
