Stereophonics have always been a favourite of mine, although the amount of love I have for them has varied with each album and change of personnel. They started off brilliantly with Word Gets Around and Performance and Cocktails, both classic albums full of hits straddling the rock and pop genres superbly.
Then came that dodgy period with Just Enough Education To Perform, an album I actually love but that received some pretty poor reviews, and You Got To Go There To Come Back which was a definite low point. They also lost drummer Stuart Cable during this period, but have now replaced him with the excellent Javier Weyler.
Their last album, Language. Sex. Violence. Other?, release over two years ago was a return to form and included the hit song Dakota. And now they’re back again, with sixth studio album Pull The Pin being released on September 9th. To coincide with the release, the band are touring America.
According to NME, the full list of dates that my American readers may want to check out is:
Boston, MA Paradise Rock Club (September 5)
Toronto, ON Virgin Festival (7)
Philadelphia, PA World Café Live (8)
New York, NY Webster Hall (9)
Washington D.C.9:30 Club (11)
Pittsburgh, PAMr. Small Theatre (12)
Chicago, IL The Metro (13)
Los Angeles, CA Henry Fonda Theatre (16)
San Francisco, CA Great American Music Hall (17)
Portland, OR Wonder Ballroom (19)
Vancouver, BCCommodore Ballroom (20)
Seattle, WA Showbox (Market) (21)
Stereophonics are also re-releasing their full back catalogue through Vox Populi during September and October. Kelly Jones solo effort, Only The Names Have Been Changed (which is actually pretty dull), is also being released in the US for the first time.
I’m just hoping that the album carries on where the last left off, or recreates some of the enthusiasm and sheer enjoyment of the first two. If it’s another YGTGTTCB I think my love affair with the band will be over.
