2009 saw talk of a new Spice Girls reunion. It then became clear that rather than a full tour, the group were planning something else, maybe a one-off event such as the London 2012 Olympic Games. In the end, it appears the Spice Girls won’t actually be directly involved at all.

In November, The Sun reported that a musical was being created based on the Spice Girls, their career, and their music. I didn’t believe the story at the time, but Digital Spy is now reporting that Simon Fuller has confirmed it is happening.
The musical will be called Viva Forever and created by Judy Craymer, who produced the incredibly successful Mamma Mia! musical based on the music of Abba. Fuller was the Spice Girls’ manager for the first part of their career. He said:
“What Judy has achieved with her all-conquering box office smash hit ‘Mamma Mia!’ and what the Spice Girls created with their powerful record-breaking mix of girl power and hit songs, has influenced pop culture more than anyone can imagine.”
Craymer added:
[I want to] create a unique celebration of the band and its music, with its own flavor and joyful message. It is important to me that the excitement, style and humor of the Spice Girls is well represented on stage.”
This could conceivably work. However, the Spice Girls aren’t Abba or Queen, both of whom have had musicals dedicated to them. They were huge in their day but most of their songs were throwaway pop and I can’t help thinking we’ve all moved on from them and the decade they have come to symbolize.
Maybe it’s time for the Spice Girls and the people involved in their career to also move on.
