Spice Girls - Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) | Children In Need Single Review

The Spice Girls have now unveiled their new single ‘Headlines’ and the video which accompanies it. The comeback single, in aid of the BBC Children In Need charity, features all five girls doing some sort of approximation of singing, or in Victoria Beckham’s case pouting and looking pretty.

I had the single here on Brit Music Scene when it was premièred, but now the video has officially been released, I thought we should give it a full review. Dedicated Spice Girls fans may want to look away now…

We’ll start with the song, which gets off to a bad start by being lumbered with one of the worst titles in living memory. Headlines kind of makes sense, with a bit of reverse psychology ensuring the Spiceys get plenty of them, but the Friendship thing is just so cheesy and convoluted.

If they are such great friends, would they have split up in the first place. Lest we never forget that Geri Halliwell walked out on the rest of them… with friends like that who needs enemies.

The song itself doesn’t really do it for me either, it’s just so “meh”. It starts off boring and winds its merry way in to ever depressing depths of mediocrity. Harsh but true, listen to it, and then tell me it doesn’t make you yawn in a collective show of wanting the pain to end?

The only real saving grace to the song is Mel C’s solo, which makes me realise there are actually only 4 untalented Spice Girls and one quite good singer involved. She also seems to have become 10 times sexier than the first time around. I never was a fan of the sportswear dyke chav look myself.

It’s a nothing song, and the biggest pile of nothing involved is Ms Victoria Beckham who preens and pouts her way through the video without actually contributing anything of note, except a few carefully produced notes here and there so she can at least claim royalties.

Spice Girls - Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)

The girls actually look quite good in the video with time (plus plastic surgery and a good personal trainer) being very kind to them. Mel B looks a bit ropey but then she always did. I could have done with less flesh though, it’s a song for a children’s charity after all.

Like the song itself, I was just pleased when it ended, which for a video which took so long to make it caused arguments amongst the quintet is pretty amazing.

This will be number one, mark my words, but only from a mixture of being a charity single and the Spice Girls having some very loyal fans who will snap up any old crap they produce.
