Speaking Of Metallica...Hear The New Single "The Day That Never Comes"

Metallica have made it possible to listen to their new single “The Day That Never Comes“. I can honestly say that at initial listen, it’s just ok at best, but I think it will grow on you. It’s nothing epic or can even touch anything from the first four, but it’s not that bad. I just hope it’s not the best work from Death Magnetic. It’s got a One-ish breakdown at about 5:02, that almost brings you back to the slightly earlier days.

So the best I can say is if you want to listen to something that sounds like Master Of Puppets…go listen to Master Of Puppets. If you want to hear something that sounds better than St Anger, go listen to a garbage disposal sucking down 40 pounds of rotten cabbage. But seriously, this really isn’t that bad. At times it sounds as if they are trying and sometimes trying too hard. I’ll wait for the rest of the album before making any more harsh judgment calls. Let me know what you think of ‘The Day That Never Comes’.

It’s not to shabby. Kinda has a feel from all of the Jason era albums… I can hear and feel some “…Justice” and some “Load/Reload” in the song. If you check out their Myspace, you can hear a live recording of another song from this album, called “Cyanide.” It has more of a “2×4″ or “Ain’t My Bitch” groove going for it.

I’m still going to call them Gaytallica, but I’m also a little ashamed to say that I like this song. Its different. It has the melodic lead and structuring that was in Orion, and the main clean riff is very similar to the classical riffs on Master of puppets. It sounds like they put some thought into this, and that’s all that it takes to create a great song, but it doesn’t sound like they over-thought it either.

@ 2:24 the riff is really cool and ends on an unexpected note, so the song is very colorful.
They just need to get back to the sound of anxiety that they used to have, instead of trying to restore it. They need to stop asking themselves “how did we used to play?” ’cause I think deep down inside, that’s what’s always going through their heads, even though they try to act like they’re developing a new sound. This is a step back to the old days – I hope they get there. – Sorry about this long comment ;)

    Hey Scott,

I agree with you when you said they were trying too hard in the song, I think it has a little bit of everything thrown in together like a collage of their different styles in one song.

I think it is a decent song and I hope like you that it is not the best from the album.

Saying that I am waiting for their tickets to be available when they will be playing in my town.

Also I will definitely be buying the album like all my other metalli-brothers who still have hope for the bay area ex-thrashers.

Love the description of St. Anger. I agree about the new track, it is “ok”, but nothing special. It would be great if the band is really going back to the days of Master of Puppets to regain the sound, but if the want to repeat Master they should go back into the studio. It is great to remember the emotion and sound, but the album should have its own personality.
