Showtime chooses Internet over DVD for Emmy screeners

Showtime announced this week that it would make full seasons of some of its hottest shows available online via Brightcove video service for Emmy voters to watch.

In its announcement, Showtime called the move “a modern approach which provides members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) an efficient and eco-friendly option to screen eligible programming for awards consideration.” I bet it’s also a lot cheaper than sending academy members DVDs of the shows.

Should you belong to the academy, starting Feb. 15 you’ll be given a password to log on to http://sho.com/foryourconsideration, where you’ll be allowed to stream the current seasons of Weeds, Dexter, Brotherhood, Californication and The L Word. Shows that have yet to air on cable, such as the second seasons of The Tudors and This American Life, will roll out on Brightcove after their debuts on the network.

Wanted: Hacker geniuses who can crack the super-secret passcode to give the rest of us access to this treasure trove of our favorite shows.
