Those groovy Geico guys finally land in their very own sitcom tonight when ABC’s Cavemen premieres at 8pm EST with “Her Embarrassed of Caveman.” I don’t know about everyone else, but that intentionally ungrammatical English in the episode title is grating on my nerves already.
Despite the fact that many critics and potential viewers have felt a similar way about the series since long before its debut, Cavemen was the most buzzworthy new Fall 2007 show this summer when consumer research and consulting firm OTX (Online Testing eXchange) conducted a survey among U.S. residents.
In tonight’s installment, we meet several male Neanderthals trying to lead a normal life in San Diego, California: smart Joel (Bill English), his simpler younger brother Andy (Sam Huntington), and Joel’s skeptical best bud Nick (Nick Kroll). Although the three share an apartment, they each have different attitudes towards Homo sapiens. Andy is eager to experience life, even if that includes mingling with Homo sapiens, while Nick is not so trusting of the Homo sapiens around him.
Joel, on the other hand, is pretty much full integrated into “regular” society, and he has a Homo sapien girlfriend named Kate (Kaitlin Doubleday) whose mother Leslie (Julie White) owns the complex where Joel and Andy live. The premiere explores the union of Neanderthals and Homo sapiens when Joel begins to suspect that Kate is hiding their relationship from her friends due to embarrassment. The kicker, however, is that at the same time, he’s hiding their relationship from fellow cavemen Andy and Nick. Hmmm. How do you say “hypocrite”?
