See This American Life in movie theaters May 1

Ira-Glass-with-micIra Glass‘ brilliant radio show/Showtime series will soon be in movie theaters, too. This American Life — Live! is set to air on 300 screens nationwide May 1. The one-time live satellite broadcast will include shows outtakes and commentary from Glass, according to an AP story). Glass will also do a live performance of a radio sketch, mixing quotes and commentary while the audience watches. Find out more after the jump.

The show grew out of a six-city live tour Glass did last year to promote This American Life, but the movie-theater approach means Glass and his crew can reach a wider audience. “We’ll have five or six cameras, and something called a jib,” he told the AP. “I don’t know what that is, but apparently it’s very important for us to have one.”

Ticketholders will be treated to an exclusive clip that was cut from the show — it involves a group of middle schoolers who decide to become standup comedians for the summer.

“It doesn’t sound like much of a premise,” Glass said, “but, truthfully, hearing them talk about it is amazing, and watching the standup routines is pretty interesting. It’s very funny and very moving.”

Bounce over to Fathom Events to check if the show’s coming to a theater near you. If not, at least This American Life will be back for its second season May 4.
