ELLIOTT‘s revelation that DR. KELSO is 65 has caused the board to force him out of his job. TED is so thrilled about the news when he finds out, he runs naked through the halls of the hospital, until he goes outside and is immediately hit by the JANITOR driving a van.
JUDY, who likes Kelso, and guilt-ridden Elliott take care of Ted’s tongue, which he bit a piece off of, while they try to come up with a way to save Kelso’s job. A brief chat with JORDAN reveals her opinion that all they have to do is stage a confrontation with the hospital’s board members, who hate public conflict. The only problem is that DR. COX has spread the word that he wants Kelso gone. So, now everyone is afraid to earn his wrath by supporting Kelso.
Meanwhile, J.D. and TURK amuse themselves by playing “Poke the Bear,” which is just a way to make fun of Cox, who has a patient named MCCRAY he’s been unable to diagnose for two years. When Cox gets back at them by having them take the patient’s pee down to the lab, J.D. and Turk promptly get distracted and lose it.
Retracing their steps as Kelso sits outside, forcing BOON the intern to be hours late while he reminisces about his 39 years at Sacred Heart (he became chief in 1985), they finally find the sample on a rail outside where they left it. Thanks to their dumb luck, not their medical skills, the urine has turned purple, a clue that allows J.D. and Turk to determine the disease that afflicts Cox’s patient — acute intermittent poryphyria.
The patient’s reaction to the news — happiness at finally having a name for what ails him — surprises J.D. and Cox. It also helps Cox realize that the enemy you know is better than the enemy you don’t, and he gathers other high-level employees to support Kelso at the board meeting.
They manage to persuade the board that Kelso runs a tight ship at Sacred Heart, and Kelso is invited to remain in his position. After his long talk with Boon, however, Kelso is determined to end things on his own terms. So, following his suggestion that the board member shove his offer up his own ass, Kelso drives away in his convertible with the portrait of him that used to hang in the hospital’s hall in the back seat.

[...] aired at least this episode out of order. First, Dr. Cox is back as the chief of medicine despite quitting two episodes ago. Aloma Wright also returns in several scenes, but no time is spent providing any background on her [...]
I’m not so sure that Kelso is gone forever. I recently saw some photos from the May 8 season finale, and he’s there just as plain as day.
I’m betting he’ll be back (thank goodness, because he’s my fave — so kooky).
I can’t believe Kelso is gone! We will miss him! But I loved that he drove off with his portrait in the back seat.
