The Oscar nominations are out and quite a few scifi movies appeared in the major categories including best picture. Avatar landed in the top spot as expected, but I was surprised to see District 9 in the list as well. James Cameron is up for Best Director for Avatar as well and District 9 gets on the list for best adapted screenplay.
Star Trek comes into the mix with nominations in Special Effects, Make-up and Sound categories. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, gets a sound nod as well.
What do you think? Should Star Trek have received a Best Picture nom as well? Does District 9 deserve the 4 nominations it got? And can Avatar hold the top spot when for the first time since 1943, there are 10 films up for Best Picture?
Find out when all is revealed at the 82nd Academy Awards on March 7.

IMO the best sci-fi film of the year is not on that list. Moon was simply a brilliantly story, and Sam Rockwell deserved a best actor nomination for his portrayal of three different versions of Astronaut Sam Bell.
IMO, Avatar does not deserve a best picture nom. It was technically amazing but an oscar for best picture?? District 9 would be much more worthy as a true example of sci fi. While Star Trek was good, it’s an action flick plain and simple and just like Avatar; makes no great strides in writing or performances.
