The results are in and once again the clueless minds of the Grammy Nomination board, or whatever the hell they’re called has announced the nominees for the Rock categories for the 2008 Grammy Awards.
Here is the short list via Rolling Stone and my opinion.
Best Rock Album
Coldplay – Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends
Kid Rock – Rock N Roll Jesus
Kings of Leon – Only By The Night
Metallica – Death Magnetic
The Raconteurs – Consolers Of The Lonely
Chances are this will go to Coldplay. Metallica really shouldn’t be in there. If this was back in the Load or Reload era I could understand but Death Magnetic is more Metal than rock. If they wasn’t a metal album category then they should create one. Unfortunately these bastards don’t know a damn thing about rock or metal. Would you consider Coldplay rock or pop?
Best Rock Song
Bruce Springsteen – “Girls In Their Summer Clothes”
Radiohead – “House Of Cards”
Death Cab for Cutie – “I Will Possess Your Heart ”
Kings of Leon – “Sex On Fire”
Coldplay – “Violet Hill”
Once again, Coldplay will probably win this just because they are Coldplay although it should probably go to Radiohead.
Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals
AC/DC – “Rock ‘N Roll Train”
Coldplay – “Violet Hill”
Eagles – “Long Road Out Of Eden”
Kings of Leon – “Sex On Fire”
Radiohead – “House Of Cards”
What a stupid category. AC/DC should be up there in the best Rock Album category and not this ridiculous one.
Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance
John Mayer – “Gravity” from Where The Light Is — Live In Los Angeles
Paul McCartney – “I Saw Her Standing There” from Amoeba’s Secret
Bruce Springsteen – “Girls In Their Summer Clothes” from Magic
Eddie Vedder – “Rise”
Neil Young – “No Hidden Path” from Chrome Dreams II
John Mayer will probably win this because he’s a common name in “Rock” these days. Paul McCartney is nominated for a song he wrote like 40 years ago? Whatever…
