Stephen King is getting more annoying by the minute. He recently slammed Stephenie Meyer and called her a no-talent loser.

Ok, he wasn’t quite that harsh, but really, you shouldn’t slam someone who has such a huge fan base as Stephenie Meyer and her "Twilight" series. I’d call that pretty darn successful, Stephen!

He said: "Both [J.K.] Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people … The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good."

I’m not liking Stephen King very much at the moment.

What about you? Does this bug the heck out of you?!

Strange logic. Don’t see how large sales automatically mean good writing.

I think King is dead on!
What the hill in twilight that makes it worth reading or even considered (original or ingenious)?
this depiction of vampires ( the sad, dark, quiet, closed of and handsome) who isolate themselves from other peaple, and the one that falls for the human girl is all (overdone- thoroughly exploited plot) that has nothing new or hooking any more, and where is the story actually? where is the drama? that the girl was chased by an evil vampire and saved?
Yes, stephanie mayer can’t write worth a darn, and you might want to see twilight rating on imdb!

Here’s the thing… Stephenie Meyer has simply taken the basic theme of every garbage romance novel out there and thrown in vampires. Completely unoriginal, and she could frankly use a better editor. JK Rowling, however, had a very original idea and wrote quite well with it. I’m with mister King on this one.

I agree with Kng. She can’t write. What she writes is boring. I tried to read it, I honestly did try; but it was so boring, how she was talking about vampire love and sparkly vampires how the sparkly skin is the “skin of the killer” I think she came up with this idea when she was high on something. I found it terrible. However, with Harry Potter, JK Rowling has sparked my interest time and time again with each passing book, until the grand finale. Every plot, every twist at the end made me interested all the more, and anticipate the next Harry Potter book. The same applies to King’s novels. When HP finally ended 3 years ago, I was saddened because there would be no next HP to look forward to. Also, just because Meyer sold a lot of books doesn’t mean she can write. It just means there are a gaggle of girls who would love to be involved with a “tortured artist” version of a vampire.

Great job Jane Boursaw, you just diminished the credibility of this website–if ever this site did have one. I’ll never read anything written on this site ever. You, like Stephanie Meyer, know NOTHING about writing reviews and literature.

    J. K. Rowling GENIUS > Stephanie Meyer WHO?

Stephen King is a god compared to Stephanie Meyer. Twilight is a very stupid and I only read and saw the first book and movie. Shawshank Redemption the movie is just as amazing as the story Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.

(it’s been over a year but i feel like reacting. XD)
stephen king knows what he’s talking about because he is the master of horror books(in my opinion). sad truth is that most people nowadays fail to make their own judgment and just go with the hype. i read the twilight (forced myself to finish it) and it’s okay. i get the same feeling when i “read” typical shoujo manga. :))) didn’t make me think. nor did i imagine myself a secondary character, something i do when a novel’s really good. as for jk rowling…she’s definitely amazing. HP will be classics. btw, king is the king. XD

Stephen King is 100% right. I have (unfortunately) read Twilight and most fanfiction I have read is better than the trash she writes. I also love how Stephanie Meyer ‘Fans’ have rushed to her aid saying he doesn’t know a good book if it hit him. Maybe we should all take copies of ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, ‘The Shining’ and other class hits and hit them with his books?

You failed to mention the part where he said Rowling was an writer for the ages, and Meyer is a writer of the season. It’s true. Twilight will pass, and no one will care. How long has Potter been around? And how big is THAT fan base? That’s what I thought.

Ok, I may been a bit harshly about her books and that girls love it atc. But he’s truly right. Those books, are badly writen and made so that teenagers can get hot without a boyfriend. Rise expectations that nobody will ever fill and make the world a sad place.

I’m not against that those books keep coming out (They are cheap presents for my girlfriend… instead of a fucking $300 cellphone), but REALLY REALLY Twlight fans… Don’t blind yourselves for fandom… PLEASE!

He’s just pointing out that her stories are not good at all and never will. He has made tons of stories, each one better than that stale stories she writes. You didn’t made a single valid argument to defend your complain, just that she’s very succesful and that “you don’t like him very much”. Succesful doesn’t mean a good writer because you can give generation of girls a white guy with a square jaw, a tanned muscular guy and they will watch it… or if you just talk about books, just give them a story about vampires falling in love and a depressed chick that they can identify with…

Yes, he’s exactly right and it’s very strange that adults read the twilight series. Very few people realize Stephen King wrote a novella–Rita Hayworth, which was adapted to The shawshank Redemtion and Stand By Me– novella The Body. Both are classics and on most favorite movie of all time list. So yeah he knows what he’s talking about. Never mind his other master pieces in the horror/suspense genre..so yeah he knows what he’s talking about.

what’s popular isn’t always ‘good’. king was speaking not about meyer’s popularity as an author, but about her talent. just because she has sold millions of books, it doesn’t mean that she is a skilled author in terms of craft, grammar and tone. in fact, a lot of her prose is quite awful; she’s particularly adept at over-using commas.

it’s just like saying that lady gaga isn’t a very good singer. she’s not; anyone who’s heard her live would say that. she may have sold millions of records but that’s not on the strength of her vocal talent. it’s because of her entire brand. no choir would take gaga on, and likewise many more prestigious writing schools would reject meyer. but they’re both very popular, because they’ve created wildly popular brands.

This is Why I Love Stephen king.
Thats all I have to say.

Steven King is absolutely correct! Success does not necessarily mean quality; Steven King just happens to be a successful writer that CAN write. Stephenie Meyer’s style is juvenile and, frankly, BORING! All the Twi-Tards need to relax. Once they hit puberty (yes, even the 45-year-old Twi-tards), they will realize that these books are utter rubbish.

Stephen King opened the door for many new authors, and he’s still there in his dinner suit with a smile on his face, letting as many in as he can. When he writes a collection (see Everything’s Eventual) he’ll often list names of other authors-usually short-story or novella specialists-that the reader should check out. He’s concerned that print is dying out in the age of technology and the internet, but he’s determined to keep it alive. He’s a team player.

King’s also a critic. Not a backseat, I-write-good-books-that-make-lots-of-moolah critic, but the genuine article. Sure, he has experience which lends support to what he’s saying, but he knows what makes a good story and what will speak to the hearts of his Constant Readers. He’s not insulting Meyer for the sake of insulting, or because he’s got an egotistical power trip problem, but because he sees the stories for what they are-the feeble jottings of a post-grad writer appealing to one audience in order to make money. Her books were published in-what, 2004? The movies were made something like 2 or 3 years later, and became worldwide blockbusters, not because of life-changing storylines but because of straight up sales. King’s movies weren’t all blockbusters, but Shawshank Redemption is now pretty much a staple in modern classic cinema, and The Green Mile is regarded as one of Tom Hanks’ finest performances along with Forrest Gump. Trust me, you’re not going to see Pattinson winning the lifetime achievement award and have snippets of his scenes playing on a huge screen. Granted, he’s an awful actor, but the source material doesn’t help.

Speaking of source material, has anyone really looked at what Twilight’s about? A girl who does anything to get with a guy who treats her like ass. The book’s message basically says that girls need to throw themselves into the nearest trailer park and get on their redneck husband’s sandwich train right away. I suppose if you’re 13, you don’t really read that much into a book like this, but when Meyer starts criticizing classic books like Wuthering Heights as if she’s written a modern day masterpiece instead of a cash cow, we need to look at her books and tell her that no, we’d rather do our colouring books since that’s the age we’ll be reading hers.

That’s my disjointed Twilight rant. Sure, I suppose it helps young girls deal with growing up and the new feelings they experience as they mature, but the overall message is pretty shitty. Wake up and read some real novels-if not Stephen King, try some Ludlum or Clancy for action, or even Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas series, it’s pretty good. Evanovich is alright too, so I’ve heard, though I haven’t read her stuff. Give new books a try and stop throwing your hands up and wailing when people call these books out for what they are-firewood.

“stephen king is just jealous of stephenie meyer he cant accept that she is the best auther ever and is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than he will ever be the twilight saga is sooooooooooooo amazing”

Oh my God. I’ve never laughed that hard.
How could Stephen King be… what? JEALOUS? Come on, he’s one of the best writers of the century, there are a lot of films created from his books and are still successfull today.
I’ve read some pages of the last Meyer’s book. Even with my broken English I can see how awful her style is. Really.

I think this quote is very fitting.

“There are also books full of great writing that don’t have very good stories. Read sometimes for the story, Bobby. Don’t be like the book-snobs who won’t do that. Read sometimes for the words — the language. Don’t be like the play-it-safers that won’t do that. But when you find a book that has both a good story and good words, treasure that book.”

(This is a quote from Stephen King’s “Hearts in Atlantis”)

Twilight is certainly not read by book-snobs, and rather than play-it-safers, Twilight is read by role-players. The characters, Bella in particular, are so wonderfully vague you can read it like a video game with you playing as Bella. It’s fun but ultimately a dating sim in the form of a book. It can’t compare to J.K. Rowling’s books or Stephen King’s, in which the characters are three-dimensional and aren’t easily replaced.

Twilight is an entertaining, easy read. Successful is one thing, being able to write worth a darn is another matter altogether.
