Wow, this chart battle for Christmas number one is simmering nicely. Who would have thought that Rage Against The Machine could ever be in with a shout of the topping the U.K. music charts over the holiday – but that is exactly the situation playing out at the moment.

The story so far: Sick of The X Factor dominating the Christmas charts, a Facebook group was started to get Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine to number one instead of Joe McElderry’s The Climb. Simon Cowell isn’t too happy at the whole thing but do we care what he thinks?
RATM have now given their backing to the campaign. They appeared on Radio 5Live this morning, where they were interviewed by Nicky Campbell before performing the track live. Although asked to tone the lyrics down, they launched into the very sweary ending before they were swiftly cut off by an overzealous producer.
Meanwhile, the bookies now have RATM as favorites to hit the top spot this Sunday. They are now 8/11, with Joe McElderry having slipped to Evens. No one else is even in the running.
Best of all, Killing In The Name was leading at the midweek point, with the charts up to Tuesday night revealing the Rage track having been downloaded 175,163 times, compared to 109,726 times for The Climb. However, McElderry’s song is now available to buy in shops, and that could blow the RATM campaign out of the water.
This one is too close to call at the moment, so whoever you’re backing you’d better make sure you go out and buy the single between now and Saturday.
