It’s been the most exciting chart battle the U.K. has seen in years, with Joe McElderry battling against Rage Against The Machine to take the top spot. And Rage have taken it, scoring the 2009 Christmas number one and denting Simon Cowell’s manufactured pop machine in the process.

Thanks to a Facebook campaign, Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name went head-to-head with The Climb by Joe McElderry. One is a Miley Cyrus cover sung by the winner of The X Factor and one is a classic track by one of the best bands ever.
But the British public had their say, buying and downloading their choice of record, and RATM made it to number one in the end, relegating McElderry to number two. Ha!
This is the first time in four years that The X Factor has failed to grab Christmas number one. And rightly so. I have nothing against Joe – he’s a talented guy – but this is the right result for music, for music lovers, and for the British charts.

I’m listening to Joe on Radio 1, he sounds pretty speechless.
Bless, anyway – I’m looking forward to this free gig now. I missed out on seeing RATM in 2008.
