I love Colin Farrell and Edward Norton individually, but together on-screen, they’re dynamite. I’m tempted to say they act the socks off everyone in close range, but there are some other really good performances in this movie, too.
Norton plays Ray Tierney, a second-generation NYPD cop whose older brother Francis (Noah Emmerich) and brother-in-law Jimmy (Colin Farrell) are also NYPD cops. Jon Voight plays the matriarch of the clan, also a long-time cop, now retired.
More after the jump, including a trailer…
Francis is the head of his precinct, and things get dicey when a suspicious shoot-out leaves four of his officers dead. Ray, who’s been off the streets since a previous scandal, agrees to join a task force to investigate the murders. But he soon discovers that Jimmy and other cops are involved in a huge corruption ring, selling their protection services to the highest-paying thugs.
Ok, so much of the storyline is predictable, although there’s a few scenes at the end I didn’t see coming. But the multi-layered, nuanced performances of Norton, Farrell and Emmerich make this a movie worth seeing.
Things get a little bogged down in the subplots with the women in their lives, but ultimately, these characters give some backstory and help us to see why the main characters do what they do. Carmen Ejogo plays Ray’s estranged wife; Jennifer Ehle plays Francis’ cancer-stricken wife; and Lake Bell (whom I’ve loved since “Surface”), plays Jimmy’s wife, who has no idea what her husband is up to.
I also appreciate the authentic settings, which take us into the Dominican gang culture of New York’s Washington Heights, and soundtrack, which features tunes by Latino rappers. Check out the trailer and pics below:
