Penny’s future uncertain in Season 6

Actress Sonya Walger, who plays Penelope Widmore Hume, the long-lost-and-then-found love of Desmond’s life, appeared over the weekend at the ABC Press Tour to promote her new series Flash Forward. (Industry insiders are saying that Flash Forward looks very promising, by the way.)

Anyway, according to Entertainment Weekly‘s Michael Ausiello, Walger has not yet been approached about returning to Lost for Season 6, and has “no idea” if she will be.

What this means is… well, completely unclear. It could be that the producers aren’t planning to wrap up the Desmond/Penny storyline until late in the final season. More likely, at least for the start of the season, the time-changing effects of the hydrogen bomb’s explosion in 1977 have drastically altered Desmond’s past as much as everyone else’s — or maybe more. What if he and Penny never met? (Please say it isn’t so!) Or maybe they just think that Desmond and Penny’s storyline was wrapped up sufficiently in Season 5.
