Paul McCartney Talks John Lennon, Heather Mills

I haven’t liked much of Paul McCartney’s output since The Beatles split. In fact, I don’t particularly like the man. However, the fact that he was in The Beatles means I have a reverence towards him that is bordering on religious. Because The Beatles were, in fact, bigger than Jesus.

PAUL MCCARTNEY

McCartney has recently given a couple of interviews with some interesting revelations in. And that’s the thing – love him or hate him, McCartney is a man who was in the biggest pop group ever, is one of the richest entertainers in the world, and is famous absolutely everywhere. Which means he’s kind of interesting.

McCartney recently spoke to The Times about a number of topics but what interests me was hearing about his relationship with John Lennon at the time of his death in 1980. McCartney was talking about the new film, Nowhere Boy, which includes McCartney singing Here Today, a song he wrote immediately following Lennon’s murder. He said:

“I’m talking to John in my head. It’s a conversation we didn’t have. Yeah, we were mates. God, that was so cool. It was the saving grace. Because it got a bit sticky after The Beatles. We were really good mates again – it was lovely, actually. Performing this song, in New York, where he was killed, is a very emotional affair. The last verse, where I sing, ‘And if I said I really loved you, and was glad you came along’. Jesus, it’s like singing it to your dad who died.”

Speaking to Q magazine (via Digital Spy) about the decade that is soon coming to an end, McCartney mentioned his successes and failures of the past few years. Heather Mills was clearly a mistake, while his The Fireman project was not. He said:

“I suppose the marriage has to be a prime contender for mistake of the decade. But I don’t want to down anyone. These things happen you know? But I tend to look at the positive side, which is that I have another beautiful daughter out of it. I’ve managed to feel quite fulfilled this decade. If I hadn’t done my side project The Fireman I think I would wish I’d done that because it freshened ideas up for me.”

I can’t help but be intrigued by Paul McCartney, even to this day. I guess it’s just unfortunate that his post-Beatles work didn’t ever live up to the standard set while in the band.
