I’ve covered Oasis quite extensively here on Brit Music Scene in the run up to the release of their seventh studio album, Dig Out Your Soul.
While most of the coverage has unfortunately been about Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher’s attempts at gaining publicity (obviously successful) from slagging off their fellow musicians, it’s finally time for the music to do the talking.
Dig Out Your Soul isn’t out for another month (October 6th), but the first single from the album, The Shock Of The Lightning is preceding it. Here it is embedded below (after the cut) for your visual and aural pleasure, along with my thoughts on both the song and the video.
The song is unmistakably Oasis. From the opening note, there is no doubt this is the work of Noel Gallagher, although his influences are also there plain to see. And then Liam starts singing and it’s like Oasis have never been away.
While it’s classic Oasis, there is enough different about the song to stop it being just a rip-off of one of the earlier singles. While there is a chorus, it’s not quite as anthemic as some of their others, and melts in to the rest of the song much better as a result.
The video shows Liam singing, with footage from the whole Dig Out Your Soul artwork providing the backdrop. The effects are like something from the 1970s and the whole visual side of things feels slightly dated as a result.
Great song but not so great video. But with reviewers of the album stating that The Shock Of The Lightning is nowhere near the best song on Dig Out Your Soul, I think there is a lot more to come from Oasis this time around.
Song: 8/10

Yeah I agree with your scores. The song is pretty good, not the best Oasis have done, but non the less a great tune. The video, not so great, but that doesn’t really matter to me. On a side note I was at V Fest Sunday when that dude jumped Noel from behind…..Not cool, but Oasis still RULE!
