Here’s a novel approach to promote your new album: employ buskers to perform some of the as-yet-unheard tracks on the streets of New York. This is the latest attempt by Oasis to try and build publicity in the States for their forthcoming new album, Dig Out Your Soul.

Oasis seem to be really concentrating on North America in the build-up to the release of Dig Out Your Soul. As well as recently touring the USA and Canada, a tour that was interrupted when a mindless yob attacked Noel Gallagher on stage, the group seem to be out to grab some headlines.
As part of the documentary film being made about the Manchester band by Brendan and Emmett Malloy, Oasis selected a group of buskers and street musicians to play some of the tracks from the album around the streets of Manhattan. These musicians then played around the city on Friday September 12th.
Some of the buskers played indoors on subway platforms, while other braved the pouring rain to play outside. Al of the performers attracted big crowds, ranging from interested passers-by to Oasis fans eager to hear the unreleased songs for the first time.
Before the musicians took to the streets, Oasis paid them a visit in a warehouse in Brooklyn to discuss the plans. Noel even gave the guitarists some tips on how to play some of the songs correctly. NME reports that the Gallaghers were so impressed that they joked about taking the buskers on tour with them.
NYCVisit has the full story of the promotion of Dig Out Your Soul, as well as footage of the rehearsals. The album is due out on October 6th, and I hope for Oasis’s sake that all of this across the Atlantic effort pays off. I suppose the album is already guaranteed to sell in the UK, so they may as well focus their attention elsewhere.
