You just knew that the success of the campaign to get Rage Against The Machine to Christmas number one was going to set off a chain reaction. And so it has, with a new Facebook group now trying to get the Sex Pistols to number one for the Queen’s birthday in June.

To call the Killing In The Name campaign a success is an understatement. RATM made it to Christmas number one ahead of The X Factor’s Joe McElderry after a grassroots effort which started on Facebook and spread onwards and outwards.
Now, a Facebook group has been set up to try and gain support for God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols to get to number one. The Queen’s official birthday has been chosen as the perfect occasion, although it isn’t until June 12, a full six months away.
The song was originally released to coincide with the Queen’s Silver Jubilee celebrations in June 1977. It only reached number two, losing out to a Rod Stewart record. And many people both inside and outside the industry maintain it was a conspiracy theory which prevented the Sex Pistols hitting number one that week.
This is another campaign I can fully get behind, as getting God Save The Queen to number one this time round would go some way to righting that wrong.
However, with six months to go, I do wonder if this campaign can keep its momentum for as long as needed. It would probably have been better to start the campaign in April and not risk being forgotten about by the time the event is due.
