Robbie Williams was once the cream of British Pop talent. Adored by millions of teenage girls while in Take That, he found incredible success when he decided to go solo, and at one time, was the best thing since sliced bread.
And then he moved to L.A., lost touch with reality, lost songwriter Guy Chambers, and then released Rudebox, one the most ill-conceived and overblown albums I’ve ever heard.
Not much has been seen of Williams over the past year. There have been the odd dalliances with the press, including the latest rumour that the singer is obsessed by UFOs and aliens. Other than that, he’s thought to have become a bit of a recluse and put weight on… again.
The biggest news from the Robbie camp came in January when it was reported that the singer had gone on strike against his record label EMI. This was after the label was bought by finance company, Terra Firma, and Guy Hands took over the running of it.
The Terra Firma takeover hasn’t exactly been popular with the label’s artists. Radiohead left the label and released In Rainbows on the Web and independently, while Paul McCartney also left EMI and signed up with Starbucks instead. The Rolling Stones then left to join Universal. And there are also rumours that Coldplay aren’t happy at the label, and are considering leaving after their next rushed release.
But it seems Robbie isn’t going anywhere, and his strike has come to an end.
His manager, Tim Clark, told BBC Newsbeat:
“I would certainly hope that a new album will be coming next year. There are never any guarantees but that’s what we would hope.”
“He’s been writing and we heard some wonderful stuff.”
“I was with Robbie last week. He was at home and he was writing songs and he played some of them to us. He’s in very fine spirits, in very fine form and I think what he’s doing sounds really wonderful.”
While it’s good news that Robbie is indeed fine, and not suffering from depression, obesity, or any of the other ailments prescribed to him over the past few months, his manager would say that wouldn’t he. Until Robbie shows his face, and some material, we can’t be sure about his state of mind.
As for the new album, does anyone still actually care? Some of his songs are brilliant, and Robbie (along with Will Young) is one of the few male solo artists I like, but his recent stuff has been pretty dire. So much so that the idea of a new album just leads me to shrug my shoulders and then carry on regardless.
What I hope happens is that Robbie forgets experimenting and just gets back to writing and recording some of the best pop songs ever. For that to happen though, he may need the help of Guy Chambers once again, and I can’t see that happening.

Yes, we do care, you will find that Robbie has thousands and thousands of fans who love him to bits and can’t wait for a new album.
I for one continually play all Robbies albums including Rudebox which is brilliant – the press don’t know what they are talking about they just make up things and run with it.
We love you Robbie.

Adore Rob and think he could deliver a GREAT album, but I must agree with Dave Parrack, Rudebox wasn’t good. Lets face it Rob is a great writer but not a great componist. Rob en Guy were a golden duo but Rob doing it alone? Maybe he will surprise us once again :-)
