It has been confirmed that Lionsgate is partnering with Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House
Pictures to produce the upcoming 3D flick Burst, written by Gary Dauberman. Last year, Daniel Calparsoro (The Cold) was attached to the project but it was announced via press release that Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) will be directing. Marshall is no stranger to Lionsgate—they distributed The Descent in 2006.
Lionsgate’s Mike Paseornek related, “We are thrilled to be working again with Neil Marshall, a modern master of horror, suspense and action. With Neil at the helm of Burst 3D, horror fans are guaranteed one of the most terrifying and innovative experiences of their moviegoing lives.”
In Burst, a group of people become stranded in a blizzard and find themselves terrorized by a malevolent force, which causes them to spontaneously combust. Although the onslaught of 3D horror has been a bit tiresome lately, this could be an appropriate fit. Marshall’s reputation in horror is pretty solid and growing. His ability to deliver a punch with clever punctuation in Doomsday fared well and I’m hoping for the same tongue-in-cheek approach with Burst. Of course, exploding gore in 3D would be just fine too.
Marshall just finished up Centurion, which is due to release August 2010 and stars Michael Fassbender and Dominic West. He’s currently working on the script for Sacrilege, which he describes as “Unforgiven by way of H.P. Lovecraft.” Yes please.
