"Milk" Preview & Trailer - Sean Penn Rocks

sean-penn-milk-1

I was a senior in high school in 1978, and while I had no idea who Harvey Milk was, his presence affected me because two of my best friends in high school were gay. It seems that we’re all connected one way or another, and I really appreciate Sean Penn’s work, so I’m looking forward to this movie.

More after the jump, including a trailer…

In 1977, Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and he was the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America. This movie charts the last eight years of his life – his move from NYC to San Francisco with lover Scott Smith (James Franco), their founding of Castro Camera, and life in his beloved Castro neighborhood. With support from friends like activist Cleve Jones (Emile Hirsch), Milk dove into politics and became an agent for hope and change.

Directed by Gus Van Sant from an original screenplay by Dustin Lance Black, “Milk” was filmed on location in San Francisco. Rated R for language, some sexual content and brief violence. In theaters (limited) Nov. 26, 2008. Expands Dec. 5. Check out the trailer:

    “Ya’ gotta’ give ‘em hope–”

    -right–

    -after 40 million HIV deaths
    and over 100 million infections
    worldwide -did we REALLY need
    another 70’s show look at
    Harvey Milk?

I mean when Hollywood couldn’t seem
to find time or money to remember
    the Korean War’s anniversary
    -even as millions continue to
suffer and die in our ‘fave’
    creditor’s neighbor and client state.

    Let’s hope that someday American’s
    start demanding their ‘renegade outsider’
    stars be actual outsiders
rather than born and bred Malibu boys
with uncles in the movie business
    like Penn.

And let’s also hope Penn himself
    someday discovers the difference
between acting (i.e. depth and character
    developement) and clever impersonation.

    —There! -Something to hope for!
