Merlin Works His Magic on Syfy

Beginning in April 2010, Syfy will begin airing the UK fantasy series Merlin starring Colin Morgan, Bradley James and Anthony Stewart Head.

The first season of the series aired on NBC in June of 2009 but low ratings bumped it from the air. The second season has never been aired here in the US but will be included in the run on Syfy.

BBC has commissioned a third season which will air in September 2010 in the UK.

If you missed it this past summer, you weren’t alone. Here’s the synopsis for the series:

An imaginative new twist on a timeless legend, Merlin is set in the mythical city of Camelot, before history began. It’s a fantastical realm of legendary beasts and mysterious peoples, and a dangerous world where magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant, Uther Pendragon.

When Merlin, a young man gifted with extraordinary magical powers, arrives in the kingdom, he quickly makes enemies, including the heir to Uther’s crown, the headstrong Prince Arthur. But guided by Uther’s wise physician, Gaius, Merlin is soon using his talents not just to survive but also to unlock Camelot’s mystical secrets.

As he does, Merlin discovers that his destiny and that of the kingdom’s young leader in waiting, Arthur, are inextricably linked.

Merlin stars Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Richard Wilson as Gaius, Katie McGrath as Morgana and Angel Coulby as Gwen.

Should be a great fit for Syfy.

I know that this is an older post but I just recently discovered merlin and I’m glad I did. I haven’t seen anything from the fourth season yet, but season three was awesome. Merlin has something different and I’ve enjoyed watching it lately. How I get to watch most of my shows is by using the Sling technology provided by DISH Network. I rarely get a chance to watch Merlin on my TV at home. Being that I am a customer and employee of DISH Network I can tell you that you can’t stream recorded shows from your DVR at home using your mobile device if you are a Comcast or Xfinity subscriber.

I AGREE WITH SHANAY AND BY HALF LIFE. I’M NOT A REGULAR SCFY VIEWER, BUT I WLL BE WATCHING MERLIN EVERY EPISODE, RERUNS OR NOT. YOU CAN’T HELP BUT TO LOVE THE ACTORS AND THEIR ROLES, AND I’M A BIG ANTHONY STEWART HEAD FAN, STARTING WITH HIS “RUPERT GILES” ROLE ON “BUFFY”, HE’S JUST TO CUTE, BUT ALSO A FANTASTIC ACTOR. PLEASE SYFY, KEEP THIS SHOW RUNNING.

I felt that the series was much more a ScyFy Channel type series. I’ve been bored with Stargate for years–Not that it wasn’t a great series. However, good to see more new blood. I don’t know why more quality shows aren’t drawn to ScyFy. Warehouse 13 and Sanctuary are great. Merlin is just a fun Dungeon & Dragons play with the Arthurian legend. Odd that Arthur is portrayed as a “Frat Jock” but I’m interested in seeing what they do with the character developement. So far, so good. Maybe Dr. Who could drop in.

At the time of the first season being shown in the USA, I read lots of gripes even before people had seen it, so I’m not surprised ratings were disappointing. I’m in the UK – the first series is good fun, if a little uneven, but I found the second compulsive viewing.
