May Blogathon: Choose Your Words Wisely (Jane’s Top 5 Movies About Writers)

strangerfiction Our May Blogathon continues, and today, I’m featuring Carolyn Erickson’s blog, Choose Your Words Wisely. Of course, this lends itself to some of my favorite movies – those revolving around words, words and more words. Here are five that spring to mind. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments!

1. Stranger Than Fiction (2006). Will Ferrell (pictured) plays Harold Crick, an IRS auditor who suddenly finds himself the subject of narration that only he can hear. It begins to affect his entire life, including his work, his romance, and even…his death. Directed by Marc Forster, this movie also stars Emma Thompson, Queen Latifah, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

More after the jump…

2. The Paper (1994). Michael Keaton is the editor of an NYC tabloid. He’s a workaholic who loves his job, but the long hours and low pay are bad for family life with pregnant wife, Martha (Marisa Tomei). Fun flick about the pressures of publishing, and it also contains one of my favorite cussing scenes of all time. Directed by Ron Howard, this movie also stars Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, and Randy Quaid.

prada1 3. The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Meryl Streep is deliciously acerbic as Miranda Priestly, the editor of a hot-shot fashion magazine. Anne Hathaway plays naive young Andy Sachs, who comes to the big city and scores a job as Miranda’s assistant. Oh, if she only knew what she was in for… Directed by David Frankel, this is one of those movies I always get hooked on if I come across it while channel surfing.

4. The Philadelphia Story (1940).  Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn) is a rich woman about to dive into marriage with respectable George Kittredge (John Howard). Thank goodness her ex-husband (Cary Grant) and a tabloid reporter (James Stewart) turn up right before the nuptials. Directed by the great George Cukor, this movie has some of the best chemistry in the biz. I’d expect nothing less of Hepburn, Cary and Stewart.

5. Shakespeare in Love (1998). Joseph Fiennes plays the young Bard, fresh out of ideas and short on cash. Then he meets Viola (Gwyneth Paltrow), a young woman who inspires him to write one of his most famous plays. Directed by John Madden, I just love the overall feel of this movie — the colors, the costumes, the characters (including Dame Judi Dench as Queen Elizabeth), and, of course, the romance.

I’ve seen four of the five movies. Never saw “The Paper.” Might have to check that one out. Loved, loved, loved “Stranger Than Fiction.”

I LOVED Stranger than Fiction and Devil Wears Prada. I’m going to have to find some time this summer to watch the other ones.
