Manny the Stunt Guy

flaming guy

There have been awards developed for the best effects and the best stunts in movies. Awards to honour the dangers these people endure as the cars they are driving blow up. This post concerns the most famous stunt man around right now.

I was looking at my copy of Garden State, the soundtrack. One of the people thanked in the insert is Manny the Stuntguy from the little anti-piracy clip they show before movies. On one level I kinda disagree with the idea of showing these anti-piracy ads.

The issue is that people are taking for free what they should be paying for. So the message is “don’t take it for free”. But the ads are shown to us at a time when we have PAID to watch movies. They seem to be preaching to the choir.
What’s worse, the message they are preaching is a little hypocritical. They are waiting until we are a captive audience, in fact again, they wait until WE have paid THEM to see ads.

They could be putting these ads on television you know. They could be PAYING for advertising space, but instead they are taking it for free. What message are they really sending?

All the same, I am a movie goer. I pay to see movies, and I recognize that there are others out there who can defend their position of taking them for free. So I suppose something must be done to uphold my position on the matter, and if that means I have to sit through a short advertisement (even if it’s the wrong sort of message told to the wrong people) then C’est la vie.

hmmmm….this was originally going to be a post about stunts and special effects, but I got off on a rabbit trail. Oh well, we’ll do that one next time.

A very important rabbit trail though. I think it’s coming to a crunch where even good, honest non-pirates are having trouble swallowing the rising ticket prices at cinemas, and the $5 bag of popcorn phenomena. Movies need to be made more affordable so that people aren’t tempted to rip them off (of course some people always will go this route).

Hollywood is getting a reputation as a bully as well, and a money hungry monster. I don’t think that it’s dented image is making anyone more sympathetic to the plight of the multi-millionaires. It’s important that we see people like Manny though, whose livelihood also depends on the success of his films, and who may not be making seven figures.
