JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Carlton Cuse have been named some of the smartest people in the television biz in a new feature by Entertainment Weekly. (Abrams and Lindelof are pictured here at the 2005 Emmys.) In a countdown of the 25 smartest of the TV smarties, Abrams came in at #18 primarly for his new show Fringe, while Lindelof and Cuse were named together at #15 (in a tie with Desperate Housewives‘ showrunner Marc Cherry).
Personally, I can’t seem to get excited by this. I’m glad they were named and all, but the best EW can come up with is #15 and #18? Come on — doesn’t the dude that creates all those insipid reality shows on VH1 hang out somewhere that low on the list? I guess I shouldn’t expect too much from a list that includes the creator of the painfully unfunny Two and a Half Men. And the fact that EW includes no mention of Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly, Dollhouse) or Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) just seals the deal.
It’s decent recognition for the Lost guys, but still I say… meh. They deserve better.

I don’t agree completely: sure, they should have made the top 10, but Chuck Lorre’s shows are not completely un-funny. The Big Bang Theory for instance is one of the best comedies i’ve seen in years.
Love Fringe! My fave show of this season (so far).
As to EW…? Yeah, meh!
