Paramount held a release party in Los Angeles Monday night of this week to celebrate the DVD/Blu-ray release of Star Trek, and Lost’s masterminds Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse were in attendance. Lindelof seems to have been cornered by a number of reporters, who managed to get some juicy teasers out of him regarding what to expect in Season 6.
Don’t worry, spoilerphobes: there are no actual spoilers here.
Between these three interviews from the event, here’s a summary of the info to be gleaned:
- The character from classic literature that most resembles Sawyer’s love life: Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights.
- Regarding the much-debated question of which mysteries will be explained and which won’t, Lindelof gives the greatest amount of clarity on the subject so far by saying, “…I think what [we're going for] is a real sense of resolution, particularly on a character level. Who’s going to live, who’s going to die, who’s going to hook up with who, why were they all brought here in the first place, was it arbitrary, is there meaning behind it?” He also says that the mysteries that the writers consider to be actual mysteries will be resolved. The minuscule stuff that the fans arbitrarily latch onto sometimes… not so much.
- Lindelof describes finally providing fans with the answers they’ve been waiting for to “Christmas shopping for five years” but finally “Christmas is here and it’s time to open up the closet and start unwrapping.” (Cool metaphor.)
- The focus in the final season, character-wise, is on the castaways that have been there from the beginning (or near the beginning, like Ben), though Lindelof says there are a few new faces joining the cast this year. He says one of the focuses of the year is to create a grand sense of nostalgia for viewers.
- The pace of Season 6: Lindelof describes the 18 hours of Season 6 as all one big grand finale. Regarding the flow of answers, he says, “You will probably get a little more than you were expecting a little sooner than you were expecting.”
- Will there be any time travel in Season 6? Lindelof has stated in the past that the show was done with time travel after Season 5. He’s a bit more coy about this now, refusing to say definitively that time travel is over, but he does say that the show’s trademark nonlinear storytelling style will continue to be a part of the show in the final season.
- One interviewer asked if Lost University might provide any early clues about Season 6. Lindelof says only insofar as the entire LU venture was created to encourage viewers to go back and refresh their memories on a lot of the biggest ideas and storylines the show has done over the last five years. There are no overt clues about what’s to come planted within the LU courses.
