Is Laura Linney Showtime’s next MLP? The celebrated dramatic actress has signed on to star in a pilot comedy series about a woman diagnosed with cancer, the network announced this week.
Linney, a multiple Oscar nominee and three-time Emmy winner, said in the announcement that she expects the series to be a great challenge.
“How one lives fully while being tested by the unpredictability of life, and what one learns in the process, is always filled with endless possibilities for an actor,” she said.
The show, tentatively titled The C Word, will follow Linney’s character as she strives to find the lighter, brighter moments in life despite her illness.
In announcing the new project, Showtime exec Bob Greenblatt raved about the veteran actress, saying Linney “will no doubt make this character both heartbreaking and disarmingly funny.”
Indeed, Linney has earned a slew of awards for her work in TV and film. Her movie credits include Mystic River, Love Actually and The Truman Show. And she’s no stranger to Showtime, having appeared in the network movie Wild Iris and in the Tales of the City franchise.
Linney recently earned Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe awards for her performance as Abigail Adams on the HBO project John Adams. Her current films include The Details, co-starring Tobey McGuire, and Sympathy for Delicious, with Orlando Bloom, Mark Ruffalo and Juliette Lewis. She’s shown here on the set of Sympathy for Delicious, which is currently in post-production.
Linney is expected to begin shooting the pilot for The C Word this fall.
