Kajagoogoo - Rocket Boy | New Song & Video

You all remember Kajagoogoo right? What do you mean no? Well for those who weren’t around in the 80s or just stayed away from cheesy pop, they were a group lead by Limahl, he of the big stupid looking multi-coloured hair. This picture of them should jog your memory, and may even give you nightmares.

Kajagoogoo

Their only hit was debut single ‘Too Shy’, which hit big both sides of the Atlantic. After that Limahl went solo and the rest is history, well sort of.

It turns out Kajagoogoo are back! After appearing and temporarily getting back together in 2004 for a VH1 Band Reunited episode, Nick Beggs, Steve Askew and Stuart Neale decided to give it another go. Beggs is now lead singer, as he was after Limahl originally left/got sacked from the band in the early 80s. And this, believe it or not is there new video…

Let’s face it, the song is pretty dire, with only those people stuck in some 80 timewarp being able to find any joy from it surely. The video is qute funny though, showing singer Beggs singing in to a hairbrush in front of his PC. It actually feels very 80s, which is fitting I suppose.

I can’t get over the fact that the hair has seemingly remained the same, even 20 years later, although I suspect the cowboy hat is hiding some bald spots or thinning. Constant bleaching has that effect!

To me the 80s was probably the low point for British music, with the decade as a whole being overshadowed in terms of musical genius by all others. But there seems to be a retro vibe going on, with people clamouring to embrace the 80s yet again, and remember it fondly. I don’t mind if it means we get quality stuff like Guitar Hero 80s, but please leave the atrocious hair and shoulder pads combo back where it belongs.

Sadly, I was growing up in the 80’s but at least I didn’t carry an 80’s mullet through into my adult life… unlike a girl I work with who seems to be indifferent to the jeers she gets about hers. Maybe she’s secretly holding a flame for the guys in Kajagoogoo ;)

Sadly there’s still a lot of mullets around… they were never good surely?!

It kind of worked for Kajagoogoo though I suppose, people remember them for the hair!
