Kaiser Chiefs Versus Oasis - Ricky Wilson Claims New Album Means They Are Kings

Ricky Wilson From Kaiser ChiefsWhenever a band have a new album ready for release, and they’ve been away for a while, it’s almost a guarantee that one of the members will start mouthing off against some other band in an effort to get some free publicity, and their name back on the tips of everyone’s tongue.

Oasis are no strangers to this strategy, being part of the notorious Blur Vs Oasis battle in the 1990s where both Britpop bands laid in to each other and gained chart success partly as a result.

The Gallagher brothers have both got big mouths and use them whenever they feel like it, but now they find themselves on the receiving end of someone else’s diatribe.

The man doing the smack talking this time is Ricky Wilson from Leeds Indie kids (Granddads would be more appropriate) Kaiser Chiefs. He has made some rather snarky comments about the legendary Manchester rockers, who let’s face it have outlived many bands such as the Kaiser Chiefs in their day.

Talking to The Sun newspaper at the opening of London barbers Percy & Reed (only the best events for our Ricky), he said:

“Oasis have disappeared up their own arse. They think they are Led Zeppelin. They’re not. Music has moved on and I think we are the band that most music fans would see as their successor.”

“Our new album is shaping up. I reckon it’s our best stuff yet. I played it to our manager the other day, who has known us for over ten years, and a smile just spread across his face as soon as he heard it. He reckons that it’s the best material we have come up with.”

“It isn’t finished but, in my mind, I know exactly where the vocals are going now and how it will sound. Mark Ronson is producing the album.”

I’m looking forward to the Kaisers new stuff, but to use that as a basis for slagging of Oasis is a bit of a low blow. It’s clearly for publicity, and I’ve just realised I’ve fallen for the trap. Oh well.

Oasis also have a new album due out later this year, so the battle lines are drawn for a new battle. Forget Blur, who still can’t decide whether to get back together or not, and think Kaiser Chiefs Vs Oasis. I know who my money is on, and it’s not the band who spend their time predicting riots.

OK, I’ll grant you that the Kaisers are “not all that and a bag of chips”, but Oasis have been stale since Morning Glory. If this is going to be a battle, it’ll be like watching an old drunk arm-wrestle a teenage stoner. There’s so many better bands in the UK at the moment it’s almost unbelievable.

And no, I do NOT mean The bloody Ting Tings.
