There’s not much of a difference between the character that launched Jennifer Beals to stardom and the one she plays today, The L Word star tells the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
“I think in a way it fits in the arc of what it is to be other‘ because that woman in Flashdance’ was very much outside of society in some ways,” Beals, 45, said of welder/dance Alex. “She doesn’t have a mother or a father to rely on. She doesn’t really have a family to rely on except for this one woman who ends up passing away during the film. So she is then left to be herself as much as she possibly can, and left to be as resourceful as much as she possibly can and as authentic as she possibly can through her dancing.”
That feeling of otherness means its not such an acting stretch from Alex to Bette, the career-focused lesbian mom on The L Word. Bette’s a character Beals will leave behind at the end of Season 6 — an the final season has provided some bittersweet moments for the actress, shown here on the red carpet at The Huffington Post’s Pre-Inaugural Ball.

“I don’t know what will be next, but I think what will be the most difficult thing to do is to find something that is written well and that is as helpful as it has been to so many people,” Beals said. “I think that’s very rare for a show. The kind of letters that we get, I don’t think you would get on most television shows. Our fans are incredibly loyal, and judgmental, but in a good way.”
Don’t miss episode 3 of The L Word’s final season on Sunday, February 3.

I absolutly LOVE Jennifer Beals. I think the way in which she portrays the character she acts in The L Word is amazing. It just goes to show that the stereotypical view of lesbians is wrong. As im not your ’stereotypical’ lesbian myself, i think The L Word deserves more credit! You wouldnt think that a group of women who are so beautiful, would be gay, but it does happen! I think they are all fantastic which just shows a mark of very good actors! You go girls! xxxxxx
