According to this article in The Age, Hugh Laurie took the idea of researching his role of House seriously. He even went so far as to expereiment briefly with House’s drug of choice, Vicodin.
Hugh said: “I wouldn’t recommend it – we have to be careful. But then again if you’re not in pain it gives a floaty, pleasurable feeling.”
Even though Hugh is such a perfectionist in his work, he doesn’t feel at all satisfied with the outcome.
Hugh added to Britain’s Radio Times magazine: “I don’t watch regularly. I avert my eyes when my children have it on. I hate seeing myself, but it’s even worse hearing my American accent. I had no idea I sound so retarded, a dull monotone, full of clunking mistakes.
“I’m hugely surprised ‘House’ survives. The odds are against you in this competitive business – wolves snap at your heels. It’s hard to say if I’m pleased with the show.”
I think it’s so sad that he doesn’t see just how brilliant he really is. He brings so many of us such joy watching him play his character perfectly, it’s just a shame he can’t enjoy it more.

and that is why House may not be on as long as we want. Hopefully the show will continue to bring in ratings and money and House will come along to change his paradigm a bit.
