How I Met Your Mother: 3.17 ‘The Goat’ Recap

How I Met Your Mother
Original Air Date: April 28, 2008

It’s just a few days before TED‘s 30th birthday, which will become known forever among the gang as The Day of the Goat, and we meet up with BARNEY and ROBIN the morning after they’ve slept together. Ashamed, both agree to carry on as usual, as if nothing ever happened.

Unfortunately, that’s easier for Robin to do than Barney, and he becomes consumed with guilt for sleeping with his best friend’s ex. His solution to get rid of his angst is to hire unemployed MARSHALL to be his lawyer after confessing the secret. Barney then instructs Marshall to find a loophole in the so-called Bro Code that he’s broken. If Marshall succeeds, Barney will be off the hook.

Marshall is not successful, however, because the Bro Code, written by Barney’s own ancestor, is ironclad. Barney’s next move is to find a misstep that Ted made before him. Yet, that doesn’t work either because Ted has always been an excellent bro.

Meanwhile, LILY is forced to adopt Missy the Goat when a farmer brings it to her class and scares all the children by telling them he’s taking the animal to be slaughtered after he leaves. The graphic details about where meat comes from come leaves Lily with no choice but to rescue the animal, and she takes it to the apartment until the animal rescue people arrive.

The night of Ted’s 30th birthday finally comes, and Barney is supposed to pick him up at work and take him to the rooftop non-surprise party the gang’s throwing him. Barney decides to make an unplanned detour to Las Vegas instead, though, in order to set Ted up with a lavish night for just the two of them.

It would be lovely, except that Robin already confessed to Ted earlier that she slept with Barney, and although Ted pretended to not be angry, he definitely is when he reveals that he knows to Barney. Even RANJIT, who’s driving the limo, is pissed, and Ted bails to take a cab after telling Barney he doesn’t want to be friends anymore.

So, the only clue we get about what happens later with respect to the title mother is the final scene, where Ted promises to tell a funny story about what eventually happened to the goat. It locked itself in the bathroom and was chewing on Robin’s washcloth. Then Ted stops the story after remembering it happened on his 31st birthday, not the 30th birthday he’s been talking about during the episode.
