House is the #1 Timeshifted Show

Among the many, many fans that love House, there are those of us who always record the show and watch it later, when we know we will be uninterrupted. And if I particularly loved a scene, I can back it up and watch that scene again. Don’t even ask how much easier it is when I do recaps… ;-)

So when I saw this report in Advertising Age this week, I just had to share it with you. The advertisers think it’s a bad thing for people to timeshift the show because they are less likely to watch the commercials. Even if they do watch them, they may not be timely by the time they are watched. That means wasted ad dollars. And it could mean less dollars for the show. Yikes!

I don’t know what to suggest, since I timeshift practically everything I watch on TV. But if you do see the commercials when you watch House, be sure to try to support the sponsors so the show continues to do well.

Here are the top 11 shows that regularly get timeshifted:

  PROGRAM # OF PEOPLE*
1 Fox’s “House” 5,038,000
2 ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” 4,968,000
3 NBC’s “The Office” 3,810,000
4 CBS’s “NCIS” 3,588,000
5 CBS’s “The Mentalist” 3,577,000
6 ABC’s “V” 3,566,000
7 ABC’s “Deperate Housewives” 3,355,000
8 CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” 3,219,000
9 CBS’s “Survivor: Samoa” 3,112,000
10 ABC’s “FlashForward” 3,098,000
11 CBS’s “Criminal Minds” 3,075,000

They must be making money somewhere because the actors are surely getting paid a lot of money per episode. They can’t be hurting too bad! Nothing will make me sit through some of the hideous advertisements on TV, sorry!

That’s interesting, never crossed my mind that Timeshifting would be bad for a show. I do it a lot, since several things I like are on an hour I cannot watch… I will certainly NOT stop doing it just because it’s bad for the ad people… I’m not going to change the hour of my life just so I can watch the show without recording –’

And there’s also, a fact, House is the most watched series of the world. So it’s only logical that it will the most timeshifted too. More views, more recording, it’s just a question of number…

Lynn – thanks for this article! Very cool…I watch at least one episode of House every day and watch the episodes many times. I have all of season 6 (so far) on my DVR and several of my favorites from previous seasons.
