Lily Allen has never been one of those artists who has struggled to come to terms with new technology or the way the music business is evolving. In fact, you could argue that MySpace made Allen famous. The social networking site at least helped her build a massive fan base.
Now, a week before it’s released in the UK, Allen has put her new album, It’s Not Me, It’s You, on MySpace. Anyone visiting her profile page can stream the full album, made up of 12 tracks, completely for free.
This is fitting for an artist who has always relied on the Internet for some aspects of her success, and it’s a nice way to give something back to the fans who have put her where she is today.
And unlike other artists and record labels who assume putting any content online for free is going to harm sales, Allen is intelligent enough to realize this kind of free preview is more likely to increase album sales when it drops on February 9.
I plan to review the album in the next few days but my first impressions after one listen through is very good. Allen seems to have matured, both lyrically and musically, but retained the innovative and youthful sound which makes her such a breath of fresh air.
