Hart Hanson: Bones' Lead Characters Will Discuss Having a Baby

Hart HansonToday is one of those wonderful days in the life of a Bones fan. No, there’s no new episode on TV tonight, but the super thing that happened to me was that I got to take part in another conference call interview with the creator and executive producer of Bones, Hart Hanson.

First of all, in the interest of full disclosure, I really like the guy. He’s such a warm and nice person…and so easy to talk to. That just makes the whole conversation all the more fun.

Anyway, you remember yesterday when I asked you to give me a couple of great questions to ask him? Well, one was the exact question I was planning to ask and the other I chose was related and he loved it. So here’s a quick summary of my two questions and his answers, but I’ll put the entire interview up as soon as I can get it typed up. (I promise to transcribe as fast as I can…)

This was my first question:

In August, I did an interview with the Bones writing team and they gave me the scoop then that sometime this season we will find out that “Brennan would like Booth to be the father of her child.” Is this still in the works and when can we expect to see it?

He seemed delighted that I asked it and went on to say that yes, it definitely is still in the works and we will see it sometime this season. The writing team has to figure out just the perfect story in which to reveal it, and still allow it to be a bit of a surprise to the audience. He doesn’t want it to be too obvious.

[Don't you love that about Bones? They find ways to constantly surprise and amuse us.]

As a follow-up question I asked him the question that Yoda put forth:

Would you feel more comfortable letting Booth and Bones get together if you thought of them as Nick and Nora from the “Thin Man” series instead of the often referred to “Moonlighting” series?

I’ll have the exact answer typed up with the rest of the interview soon, but he laughed and seemed to enjoy that question too. He said that he thinks of them already as more of the Nick & Nora type of relationship and that he’s flattered by the constant references to the Moonlighting series. He still thinks that in order to get them together, there has to be something strong enough to continue the wonderful dynamic between them, once the romantic tension is no longer the same.

(I suggested a baby, and he was amused, but didn’t address it directly. I suspect we have to wait to be surprised…)

There were a ton of other entertainment journalists on the call and we were technically asked to keep it to only one question and possibly a follow-up, so that’s all I got the chance to ask. But I thank each of you who took the time to submit suggested questions to me. Now I’m dying to know about Sully, the “goodbye” message and all the other things you asked!!! Don’t worry, though. I’ll keep these ready for the next interview opportunity, whenever it arises.

Now, I’ve got to go start transcribing…. :-)

Yes, I also agree with Han. I think that Booth has changed Brennan because I remember that eisode in season one where a childs finger was cut off and sent to Booth, and when they found the child and it was a hapy ending, Booth asked Brennan if she still didn’t want children and she said she was never havign children. Apparently, this has changed and I think that Booth is the reason for this.

I find it very frustrating that they are “domesticating” Brennan. I thought she was an interesting and unique character at the beginning of the show, but it seems that with every new episode, they’re pushing her further and further from that. By the time the series ends, she’s going to be a Roman Catholic Conservative SAHM.

Basically, a female clone of Booth.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, in and of itself (I oppose the “feminist” version of what constitutes a “real” woman), it just feels like a real letdown, in terms of her character. I used to think she was independently-minded, with strongly held views on the world and her function/place within it.

Yes, people can, and do, change. But Brennan isn’t “changing”— she’s doing a 180 toward a more “standard” few of feminine that, to me, feels like the equivalent of: “I fell off my bike and scraped my knee and thought I hated bikes. But then some man came along and kissed my knee, and now I realize I love bikes!”

Yes, she’s had a lot of pain and disappointment in her life, but it really bothers me that certain traits about her are basically being written as “negative” traits. Aspects of her personality— atheism, decision not to have children, original views on monogamy, sexual fulfillment/fantasy as healthy, etc.— are no longer the product of an individual mind, but psychological luggage of which the writers can’t rid her quickly enough.

And, of course, Booth is making almost no “changes” of his own, outside of the shallow. He can understand some of the squints’ lingo, but outside of that, he remains deeply rooted in his views of the world and the people who inhabit it.

Which is fine. I just wish Bones had been given the same consideration.

I’m not overly surprised about the baby talk. The reason they gave for Brennan not wanting children (“the world is scary”) was so revoltingly shallow and stereotypical, they might as well have hung a sign on it that said “Exit”, because it was little more than a backdoor for the writer’s to later allow her to change her mind.

I agree, I think Brennan will say that because she thinks Booth is a an excellent father to Parker, and that if she were to be a mother she´ll love her baby to have a dad like Booth or something, I don´t think the writers would modify the story that much to make Brennan and Booth parents, at least not yet

I’m with almost everyone else in thinking that Booth and Brennan having a kid would totally mess with everything that the writers and Emily have done to the make Bones such a unique character from other female TV characters.

There’s no way Brennan’s emotionally ready for a child. I think it’ll just be a “in the future…” thought rather than a “… I’m having a baby now” thing.

    Hi,
just wanted to say that I agree with what what most people are saying about Bones being a unique character with a unique and indivudual outlook on life, the world and evrything associated. I however disagree that she is doing a 180degree turn as the spoiler says that she tells Booth she WOULD LIKE him to be the father of her child. Implying that she isn’t pregnant but if she were to have a baby in the future Booth would make the perfect father for her child. I imagine when Brennan brings this up she will be very logical and scientifc about it, just as she is with most things.
This to me is just a step forward in her development as a character.
as I also said before this is my view and we will have to wait and see what transpires.
I actually think that they should have another case involving them having to take care of a young child or maybe young siblings and have them take them ice skating or to the park. Then have Brennan drop the bombshell on Booth that if later in life she wanted a child, she would want him to be the father. Picture perfect and everyone is happy.

    Forever “Bones”
    xx

I am excited about Booth and Brennan finally getting together! It will only enhance their relationship, both professionally and romantically. They have both been running away from each other now it is time to run to each other! It won’t destroy the show or anything, it will only make it better! That romance will still be there, only more so.

Hi there … I’m from Australia … So we don’t get to see Bones when it comes out, I cannot wait for season 5 to air … I was a bit annoyed with the way season 4 ended but I see your point a view, I’m a fiction writer myself & most likely would have done the same … anywaz when are you going to hook Ang & Jack back up … love them as a couple … oh & brack zack back … we love him over here.

I also think you should give Tempe a baby, booth the father of course … just because they have a child together dosn’t mean that they have to be together, not at the moment anyway but it will be something to keep them together.
