The mere mention of the initials H.P. can lead to screaming accusations of fandom, inquiries as to your favourite “ship” and the dreaded sorting by the Hogwarts Sorting Hat.
Yes. It’s that time again.
Warner Brothers have just released a teaser trailer for the fourth instalment of wizarding madness: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, due for theatres in November. Director Mike Newell, perhaps best known for his very non-Potter-esque films Pushing Tin and Four Weddings and a Funeral, has been challenged with upholding the extraordinarily profitable franchise. The verdict will remain out until hardcore Harry fans dissect and defend it amongst themselves, but I daresay that under his direction Goblet of Fire should provide an interesting contrast to the dark and moody cinematography of Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron.
Rumour has it that Goblet of Fire will be the most expensive film ever made, an investment which will no doubt pay off in spades as legions of Potterites flock to the nearest silver screen to cheer on their favourite Rowling creation. From the trailer, it looks as though we can expect typical Harry fare tinged, perhaps, with a heavier reliance on large volume CGI than the previous three films.
I will confess to looking forward to this film. I can’t help but be enchanted, both by Rowling’s parallel world, and by the spectacular nature with which they have been brought to the screen. I will, however, be waiting a good few days following the release before I go anywhere near the theatres.

I was also a little disappointed with Azkaban. It didn’t grab and hold my attention like the first two. I had no interest in Sirius and Lupin, which was the basis for the whole movie. It wasn’t so much directorial style at all. Cuaron’s dark and “adult”, as some people called it, was refreshing.
Excellent point about the CGI. They have some very strong actors that have been through the Harry gauntlet three times now. I’d showcase living people with chops, not animated critters.
After thoroughly enjoying the first two movies, I had high hopes for Prisoner of Azkaban. As a result I was very disappointed. I’m very much looking forward to this fourth movie as a chance for Harry to redeem himself.
“The most expensive film ever made”… I’m intrigued yet skeptical. I hope the ‘magic’ of Harry isn’t comprmised with an over-reliance on CGI.
Well, I know I am looking forward to it ;-)
