It’s that time of the year again and the Grammy Nominees for Hard Rock/Metal categories are out and I hope you weren’t expecting anything great. The usual “Big Names” get thrown in the mix just because of their names and history. Nothing groundbreaking here in my opinion.
Best Hard Rock Performance
- Inside the fire: Disturbed
- Visions: Judas Priest
- Wax Simulacra: The Mars Voltra
- Saints Of Los Angeles: Motley Crue
- Lords Of Salem: Rob Zombie
My pick for this category would be Judas Priest simply for the reason that this is a great song and everything else on this list is bovine excrement.
Best Metal Performance
- Heroes Of Our Time: DragonForce
- Nostradamus: Judas Priest
- My Apocalypse: Metallica
- Under My Thumb: Ministry
- Psychosocial: Slipknot
My Pick would be Slipknot because this is probably the best heavy song off of All Hope Is Gone. Dragonforce annoys the hell out of me, Nostradamus is the most redundant song from that album sheerly because of the number of time he sings “Nostradamus” in the song and My Apocalypse is not a great song from Death Magnetic not to mention it’s one of the songs that sound terrible production wise. Concerning Ministry, I don’t think anyone should be nominated for a cover song.
Best Rock Instrumental Performance
- Castellorizon: David Gilmour from Live At Dansk
- Suicide & Redemption: Metallica
- 34 Ghosts I-IV: Nine Inch Nails
- Hope (Live For The Art Of Peace): Rush
- Peaches En Regalia: Zappa On Zappa
My pick is David Gilmour. Although the song is mostly ambient and some orchestration until about 2:11 into the song, it just has that David Gilmour/Pink Floyd feel to it. I like Suicide & Redemption but it’s not the most creative Metallica instrumental and is far too long clocking in at nearly 10 minutes long. I haven’t heard the other three so I don’t have anything to comment on those.
Metallica is nominated for Best Rock Album but they are up against Coldplay, so as we all know Coldplay will most likely win it. Anyone else have a hard time saying “Coldplay” without vomiting just a little? Death Magnetic is also nominated for Best Recording Package and Rick Ruben is up for Producer Of The Year as usual.
AC/DC Rock N Roll Train is up for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. Once again they are up against Coldplay so their chances of winning that silly category is highly unlikely.

Maybe I haven’t heard enough of The Mars Volta, but from what I’ve heard it has been that wall of noise thing to me and I haven’t liked it. Yeah, Motley Crue…WTF?.
I think if Axl had released Chinese Democracy a couple of weeks or a month earlier it would have been in there somewhere…just because it’s “G n’ R”.
