Remember the slasher flick with the shish kebab death scene? The original DVD release of the 1981 cult classic, Happy Birthday to Me, from Columbia featured a new score and different cover art which fans were not happy about. Thankfully Anchor Bay Entertainment is releasing the film back to DVD with all the original stuff, due out October 13.
The haunting orchestral score was written and composed by Bo Harwood and Lance Rubin. The film was directed by J. Lee Thompson and starred Melissa Sue Anderson (Little House on the Prairie) and Glenn Ford (The Big Heat, Superman), along with such familiar co-stars as Lawrence Dane (Scanners, Bride of Chucky), soap star Tracy Bregman (The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and the Restless) and Matt Craven (Jacob’s Ladder).
The story follows Virginia (Anderson), a popular girl at a private school–ready to celebrate her 18th birthday. But before she can enjoy the festivities, her friends are being slaughtered one by one as she learns that an accident may connect her to the killings. The film boasts “six of the most bizarre murders you will ever see” and I have to agree with them.
Spoiler video if you haven’t seen the movie yet–the closing song “Happy Birthday to Me” by Syreeta.
