I think my conversion to pop music lover is now complete, as for the first time ever, I am willing to admit to loving a Girls Aloud song. I still love my indie, rock, and metal, real music where a band play instruments and everything, but Will Young, Sugababes, and Take That are turning me on to pop in a big way. Maybe I’m just getting old.

I’ve never been anti-pop as such but when I younger I was in to dance music, then heavily in to hip-hop, before finding the true and righteous of guitar music. But pop seems to have evolved now, with some songs actually being worth more than one listen.
As it is with the new single from Girls Aloud, a group manufactured a few years ago on Popstars: The Rivals. They’ve always released catchy songs but The Promise has to be their catchiest yet. And while I know they didn’t write it or anything, I can’t help liking it.
Video and review after the cut.
The song is very simple, with meandering verses regularly punctuated with the ever-so catchy chorus. It evokes memories of the 1960s (not from personal experience you understand) but with the glamorous girls giving it a noughties twist. I dare you to try and get this song out of your head after just one listen.
The video sees the girls roll-up at a drive-in movie theatre where they watch themselves on the big screen, just in black and white and with shimmery dresses. The dance gets very annoying after a while but apart from the repetitiveness of the moves is nicely done.
Girls Aloud are a manufactured pop group, something I would never have listened to a few years ago, but in the same way that Will Young has gone beyond his initial burst of fame to have a very successful career, so Girls Aloud have seemingly achieved the same feat.
