This episode is the series finale of Girlfriends.
The president of Dirty Girl Records informs LYNN, who’s lurking by her parking spot to spray paint over the space’s name sign, that her ploy of handing in substandard work won’t help her cause and get her released from her contract. The president has the right to release anything she turns in, so if the songs tank and bring down Lynn’s career, the company will just write the losses off.
Later, Lynn and MAYA drop by JOAN‘s house, and Joan receives a letter from Aaron in the mail. He’s just been promoted to Head Sergeant, and his letter includes another letter that he asks Joan to read to his class. When Joan arrives at the school to comply, she finds a group of unruly, disinterested teenagers who ignore their teachers, authority, and her.
Meanwhile, WILLIAM drops by Maya’s house to wait for Darnell. He’s out teaching teenage JABARI how to drive, but apparently that doesn’t go to well because he kicks his son out of the car with the advice that he needs to get a bus pass. Maya tried and failed to teach Jabari also, and when William butts in to suggest they should keep their promise to their child, Maya tells Jabari that Uncle William will teach him.
Maya accompanies Lynn back to Aaron’s school, and she tries to keep the students in check by showing them she’s from the ‘hood just like they are. Her plan doesn’t work, however, and the students force her out of the room after throwing stuff at her and running wild.
William also goes forward with his plans to teach Jabari how to drive. He spouts a whole bunch of parenting nonsense from the parenting books he’s been reading to prepare for the arrival of his son. One lesson is that adults should allow children to have a sense of identity and do things the way they want, which William translates into allowing Jabari to drive however he pleases. Jabari then turns on some music and tries to look cool for his friends as they drive by, ultimately resulting in him taking his eyes off the road as he waves to an acquaintance. The Beemer they’re riding in is damaged as a result when it crashes into a UPS box.
Joan listens to the news one morning while drinking her coffee and a brief mention of Iraq gives her the strength to return to Aaron’s school, newly determined to force the kids to listen as se reads her fiancé’s letter. She eventually succeeds by making them aware that he’s sacrificing a great deal in the foreign country, and the students’ attention leads to a discussion of how they feel about the war and the circumstances in their lives.
Aaron was the only teacher that ever earned their respect because he truly cared about them and their education. When Joan finally reads the letter, it reveals that Aaron’s unit will return to the United States in two weeks. Too bad, then, that this episode is Girlfriends‘ series finale.
The episode ends with the Dirty Girl Records president informing Lynn that after listening to them, she actually loves the subpar tracks Lynn handed in to get out of her contract and Lynn is now scheduled for time in the studio soon. Unfortunately, however, the executive adds, it’s too bad Lynn will be going to jail for stealing the president’s Grammy just as her career begins to take off.

Nope — it looks like the rumors are true since the series creator confirmed them on Valentine’s Day. We should get one final retrospective episode, though, which is (a little) better than nothing.
I hope the rumors about this being canceled are all false. I love this show.
