Ghost Lab is Coming to Discovery

19228_0056Discovery Channel takes another step into the world of ghost hunting this October with the premiere of their new show Ghost Lab. I haven’t seen the show yet but the press on it talks up the high tech nature of the show. Brad and Barry Klinge are Texas boys who founded a company called Everyday Paranormal and they claim to have a new twist on the old hunt.

What they do have is a fancy mobile lab that’s loaded with cool gadgets. It’s a 24-foot car hauler that is capable of providing 200,000 watts of electricity to power audio, video and photo analysis stations; flat-screen televisions and an interactive touch-screen smartboard.

The lab also houses surveillance video cameras capable of shooting 300 feet away in total darkness with a 180-degree peripheral view; temperature, humidity and dew point data loggers; various digital cameras, including thermal imaging cameras; audio recorders; and more than 8,000 feet of video cable.  This on-site high-tech lab enables investigators to analyze data on the premises in real time, helping them to more narrowly focus their investigations on suspected “hot spots.”

The team also consults with some of the world’s foremost specialists in science measurements to devise and test theories during their investigations.  Is there more “ghost activity” around water?  Are spirits attached to specific items or locations?  Is there a parallel universe?

Some of the locations the Klinge brothers investigate on Ghost Lab include Tombstone, Ariz., home to some of the most violent deaths in history; Shreveport Municipal Auditorium, where Elvis got his start; and Granbury Opera House where, according to legend, John Wilkes Booth changed his name to John St. Helen and performed Shakespeare after assassinating President Lincoln.

Ghost Lab premieres Tuesday, October 6 at 10:00 on Discovery Channel.

Ah, I was not aware of those aspects. I should have supposed that network televsion would seize the reins on what is and is not showed on the final cut. And my apologies for the confusion of your statement, you did very well to clear it all up and I thank you for bringing these other elements to my attention.

You said there is a lot of “glamor shots”. Do you know if that means some of the evidence is fake, or that just some of the reactions are fake? I’ll confess I don’t know very much about the whole process of filming this stuff, and I’d be disappointed (though not surprised) if networks were behind staging evidence.

V… I apologise for any confusion on this matter, but i was not giving any comment about the show itself. My statement was ment for the posters that claimed that to call the study of the paranormal as a laughable subject and otherwise was not worthy of being called true science. I do agree with some of the statments here about the show. But i do have experiance in dealing with filming and networks like discovery, and in the Klinge brothers defence they dont have a whole lot of say so about what parts of there investigations are aired and what parts are edited out that is up to the network to decide. They may investigate a location for two, three or more days but we only get to see a very small portion of the actual investigation, all of the evidence is not aired due to timing restrictions layed down by the network. So while Discovery may only show a couple of pieces of evedence on the show itself they may actually have gathered 15 or 20 or more pieces of great evedence that the network decided to cut out. Even with “Ghost Hunters” what you see aired is not actually the way their investigations happen, a lot of filmed footage that you see is staged just for “glamor shots” basicly for the show itself. My former group experianced the same thing, we had filmed for a series and had a whole seasons worth of investigations to start the series with but the network we were working with wanted to cut our entire seasons worth of footage into a 2 hour special and be done with it we refused to sign for anything but a series so the deal fell through. So give the brothers a break because what they want aired may not be what the network decides to air.

HGH, I agree with you that we need to keep pushing forward, and that the study of paranormal is very much a science and a cause for investiagtion. I enjoy and encourage it, and I applaud you for doing what you are doing and going where few people brave to go. Keep it up!

But. To describe “Ghost Lab” as “the basis of what science is as well as what [disocery channel's] namesake is” is a completely ridiculous statement to me. If you’re a professional Ghost Hunter, surely you of all people should see that these guys are a joke. Real ghost hunting science can be found with the Ghost Hunters on SyFy or elsewhere. Ghost Lab’s investigations are short and sloppy, and they are quick to declare places haunted on evidence that is hardly scientific. If I were you, I’d be outraged that unprofessional fools like this are parading around on Discovery as the example on ghost hunting. People not familiar with the paranormal will see this and think that these guys are what ghost hunting is, and no one will take ghost hunting seriously.

Of course, you are surely welcome to your opinion. But I think your opinion of this laughable group of unprofessional clowns that run Ghost Lab as being the “basis of science” and Discvoery Channel itself (in light of all of Discovery’s other supremely educational programs) is completely outrageous.

Regardless, good luck with all your work!

How ignorant is it to say the study of paranormal activity is not science. Science itself can be defined as the study of the unknown. Where would we be today if we only studied the things we already know? The Wright brothers said that one day people could fly using vehicles with wings… they were laughed at… Alexander Bell said one day people would be able to have a real time coversation with someone on the other side of the world… he was laughed at… When Thomas Jefferson decided to fly that kite during a lightning storm did he know without a doubt what would happen… no. If we do not look to the unknown then we can never truly move forward. So i praise Discovery for supporting a show that is the basis of what science is as well as what there networks namesake is… discovery, So you just go ahead and watch that documentery on volcanos (or your topic of choice), chocked full of stuff you learned back in grade school. I prefer to honor science and keep pushing the envelope to discover more about the world around us, So thats ok you just keep laughing at that which you dont belive because just like when that first airplane took flight one day people wont be able to laugh at us any more.

This show is so weak. From the over weight, small witted dudes, to the two minutes they spend investigating, the show is all wrong. What a waste of time and money (mine and theirs). We should all get paid retribution for the time we have wasted on this tripe. These guys have got to be rejects from the WWE only after having visited the buffet and failing to complete their classes at the Sylvan Learning center. Discovery has discovered the low of all lows.

Do not use psychics, clairvoyants or anything else along the lines of that. Might as well watch Most Haunted.

  7. By Adam

It is obvious these guys have no clue on what they are doing. Discovery really needs to pull this one off.

The show blows. Sorry did not mean to rhyme.

Ghost Lab does NOT hold a candle to the professionals of TAPS, or GHI on SciFi channel. I’m sorry that the Discovery channel picked up the tab on these guys. I won’t watch GL again anytime soon.. I’d rather watch re-runs of Frasier, Scrubs, or anythign to tha sort.

Tim… if that’s your idea of ‘science’ then I’d say you slept through a lot of schooling. It’s more ‘guys poking around in the dark’ and special pleading for their ‘evidence’. This is pseudoscience, plain and simple. Boring pseudoscience, I might add…

  11. By Tim

You know, I see a lot of people calling ghosts non sense, but, do those same people call God non sense. Just a thought. No one has seen him either…..and as far as it being on Discovery Channel, they are using the SCIENTIFIC, again, i say SCIENTIFIC approach to prove or disprove what others are seeing.

love this new show. i like the fact that it is more technology based than the other ghost hunting shows. can’t wait to see more.

Want to add that I hope this ends up being a good show. If this show starts picking up then TAPS will have to step up their game (not that they’re doing bad or anything like that) and the competition would be interesting.

Going to wait until at least the end of the season before making my mind up about this one.

Its simple. If there is a show that doesn’t interest you…DON’T watch it! I find the paranormal to be fascinating. Sure its on other channels, but why not Discovery? If we believed the way these posters thought, we would still be throwing sticks at an eclipse or hiding when the earth moves during an earthquake.

BRAVO Discovery channel! Oops…that’s another station as well isn’t it!

I am hesitant to judge too early (as at the time of this writing only the first episode has aired), but thus far this show is absolutely awful. There wasn’t a single program or special on Discovery in my entire life that I didn’t like until now.

Let me begin by saying these guys are nothing compared to the Ghost Hunters on SyFy. The Ghost Hunters constantly try to debunk what they are told and are endlessly suspicious of their own evidence. Rarely ever do they sit across the table from their client and officially declare anything haunted. They spend the majority of the program actually showing the investigation, and every single one of them takes it seriously with a professional approach.

In comparison to the Ghost Hunters, these Ghost Lab guys are a joke in this premiere. The over-the-top, moving “lab” with LCDs and fluorescent lights seems to be nothing more than a fancy appeal to wow their audience with the ruse of fancy technology. They spent a large portion of the episode outside of the actual investigation talking and discussing theory. At one point, they video phone some obscure scientist so that he can give his two cents. Granted, it was the first episode, so I will give them some slack here (as they need to explain their methods), but lets hope they don’t do this all the time. However, I give them no slack in making their laughable conclusions. Truly, I was blown away with what little “evidence” they found being more than enough for them to declare something along the lines of: “Dude, this place is totally haunted.”

    Really?

All they found was a closing door, cold spots, and claims of being “touched”. This kind of evidence is a joke, and if the Ghost Hunters found it, they would be far from taking the place to the level of “haunted”. Additionally, they spent the entire show with this carefree and unprofessional “dude, like totally” tone of voice. The inclusion of “lab” in the title is misleading, as it had me believing there was an element of science involved. Not so much. Instead, they just run around laughing and horse playing, gathering anecdotal evidence that cannot remotely be backed with proof. The only actual science they found was a voice that eerily said something about “they went into the light”. Hmmm. Again, not to always bring them to the Ghost Hunters, but this is their competition, so why not? From what I’ve seen with the Ghost Hunters, they don’t often find voices this undeniably clear, not to mention voices that say downright creepy things. Granted, it has happened on Ghost Hunters, but for Ghost Lab to stumble across it so easily on their very first episode? Maybe they got lucky and it actually did happen, but I find myself unable to believe it.

Again, it’s only the first episode thus far, and things could turn around. But considering how terrible this first attempt was, I have serious doubts, as it would take a complete 180 degree spin on their approach, attitude, and presentation for me to even START believing them.

we are tired of taps having music and stupid pictures jumping in when we are trying to hear what they are hearing. it’s just so agravating to watch, i missed this past wednesday and don’t feel sorry for not seeing it. it’s just gotten to be the same thing every week, there is paranormal in the house but we can’t say it’s haunted. what the heck does that mean..if there is paranormal in a house that means it’s haunted. debunking, i think they shouldn’t be told what is going on in a house or building, then go in and find what you are looking or not looking for. i think that would show that they are better ghost hunters than what the audience thinks they are. it’s like taps went to the ok corral, stayed the night, didn’t find anything, well duh, nothing happened at night, it was all during the day. it’s not all about the night time, things go on during the day too and spirits are just as active in the daylight hours as they are during the night. you can find them in every hour, any day, just don’t understand why everyone thinks they can only find spirits in the dark. time and time again i have been approached by spirits during the daytime hours.

i saw i guess was the oct 6 opening show of ghost lab. i have been waiting for a new show of ghost hunting that is truely looking for spirits. ghost hunters are always debunking, which makes the spirits mad. my husband and i are clairvoyant, spirits come to us, we don’t have all the machines and technology, and we think that’s why they do come to us. hopefully ghost lab will pick up on more that is lacking from ghost hunters. spirits know when people are really caring about their history, they will show themselves more, they will talk more and be more involved with people that care. the taps people started out good, but when spirits have people come into an area and tell the owners of homes that they don’t exist, it makes them mad. it’s not always cold spots that tell you a spirit is around, sometimes it’s the smell of electrical wires burning, when you know there aren’t any wires present. i can’t wait to see more of ghost lab, it’s awesome.

Oh give me a break you self-righteous pseudo-intellectual dudes! Scientific method clearly allows for all possibilities geniuses. Just because something can’t be out right proven does not disprove the possibility by default. Science says that the universe started from a big bang. An explosion that was so enormous that converted energy into matter and raced at the speed of light from a point of singularity as small as atom. Conclusion reached by smashing atoms together and saying look energy released equals big bang. Wrong! Atoms did not exist then therefore how can you reach a conclusion based on something not in existence at the time… Hardly PROOF. Besides energy should have released light as well so our universe should be infinitely bright not dark as it accelerates away from us. If you don’t like it don’t watch plan and simple!
