The Christopher Guest movie "For Your Consideration" premiered today at the Toronto International Film Festival and it looks hilarious!

The film is a movie within a movie about the making of "Home for Purim".

The arrival of a new film by Christopher Guest is cause for euphoria. While it departs from his trademark mockumentary format, For Your Consideration is a hilarious addition to a body of work that boasts some of the funniest films in recent memory. After heavy metal (This Is Spinal Tap), small-town theatre (Waiting for Guffman), dog shows (Best in Show) and folk music (A Mighty Wind), what better subculture to skewer than Hollywood in the grip of awards-season buzz?

Weather-beaten screen siren Marilyn Hack (Catherine O’Hara) has been struggling for recognition for thirty years. After some short-lived notoriety in the late eighties for her freakish role as an over-painted strumpet in the seamy Song for Reuben, her star has long since faded. Her latest gig is playing Esther Pisker, the ailing mamele of a Jewish family in the Deep South awaiting the return of her estranged daughter Rachel – played by belligerent stand-up comic Kelly Webb (Parker Posey) – in the melodrama Home for Purim. One day, Marilyn gets wind of an Internet rumour that her performance could land her an Academy Award® nomination. Soon Oscar fever spreads and co-stars Victor Allen Miller (Harry Shearer) – best known as the Foot-Long Wiener – and Kelly get bit too.

The film-within-a-film’s cast is surrounded by eccentric characters played by Guest’s usual gut-busting coterie, a who’s who of contemporary comedy: co-writer Eugene Levy as a scheming agent, Fred Willard and Jane Lynch as trashy Hollywood gossip show hosts, Bob Balaban and Michael McKean as the film’s odd-couple writers, and Guest himself in a towering Don King ‘do as the tempestuous director. Not to be outdone are John Michael Higgins as an unbalanced publicist, an irrepressible Jennifer Coolidge as the diaper-cleaning company heiress-turned-producer, and Richard Kind and Sandra Oh in an uproarious scene as Home for Purim’s poster designers. Leading the charge, O’Hara proves herself once again to be one of the funniest women working in film today. For Your Consideration is smart and sublime comic bliss from start to finish. I’m sure my husband will LOVE this movie as he does all Christopher Guest flicks.
