"The Dark Knight" is one of the most highly anticipated movies of next summer. I really loved the first two "Batman" movies and it was hard for me to accept anyone other than Michael Keaton in the lead role. Val Kilmer was decent, I suppose, but George Clooney was painful. I have always liked Christian Bale so I gave "Batman Begins" a chance – I’m glad that I did. That movie was great for several reasons and he was one of them. I loved watching Bruce Wayne stumble his way towards his role as a superhero – the lack of polish gave the film authenticity. I’m hoping to be able to say the same about "The Dark Knight" and preliminary photos and trailers have buoyed my expectations.
Katie Holmes has been replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal in the role of Rachel Dawes and I think it makes sense. Of course, Maggie is more of a physical presence than Katie (and, probably, a better actress) so it will be interesting to see how this fits within the context of the film.
The big news, though, is the casting of Heath Ledger as "The Joker." I’ll admit to being nervous about this but as soon as I heard his "Joker" voice and laugh, I relaxed. I was lucky enough to see a real trailer on the big screen when I saw "I Am Legend" this weekend and I have to say that Heath seems perfect! He is really showing his versatility as an actor and, as great as Christian Bale is, I’m really going to see this movie for Heath – "Love That Joker!"
The newest Batman film is coming to theaters on July 18, 2008.
