Edie Falco comes to Showtime

Edie-FalcoAs the newsmen would say, “this just in:” Showtime has signed Edie Falco to star in a half-hour comedy pilot produced by Lionsgate, the lovely house that brought us Weeds.

Coming off the high of her hilarious turn as a Vermont congresswoman who falls for Alec Baldwin’s corporate entertainment honcho on 30 Rock, Falco sought Showtime for her next project. She was looking for a high-quality project similar to the Sopranos, “something that would excite me,” she told Variety.

Falco joins Michael C. Hall and Tracey Ullman in moving from HBO to Showtime. The as-yet-untitled pilot would put her in the role of a New York nurse who faces the chaos of working in an urban hospital while dealing with her messy personal life. Showtime execs are already comparing the show to Weeds, saying it will offer a dark-comedy look at the health-care system.

I’ll update you with more info as it comes available. For now, color me impressed. The Showtime lineup just gets better and better.
